Singapore: Friday preview

Friday 16 September

singapore-logoA mixed surface race meeting from Singapore on Friday with races 2, 4 and 7 on the all-weather Polytrack and races 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10 on the Short Course (D), Turf.
While there is a fair bit of interest throughout the card, the Class 2 sprint (race 5) looks a beauty with the exciting SUPER EASY the headline act.
The former Kiwi arrived in Singapore with an impressive juvenile record and while not starting as a 2YO, the DARCI BRAHMA colt has taken all before him, winning both his races at Kranji with relative ease.
Obviously, a step up to Class 2 at only his third start in Singapore is a massive step, however the commanding wins (5 ¾ and 3 lengths respectively) have him pegged as a top-liner. With just 50kg on his back, he is the one to beat again.
MR RAFFLES, although disappointing not to have knocked in another win at his last campaign, did look impressive first up after a much needed spell and the STORM CREEK 6YO will provide SUPER EASY with his biggest test thus far.
Add the impressive MOONLITE SHOWER and the very underrated and gutsy AMADEUS MOZART to the mix and the race is a beauty.
But all eyes are on SUPER EASY, with Joao Moreira in the saddle, to see if he can make it three from three in Singapore.

Race 1

Selections; 7 EXCELLENT BEAUTY – 2 HIS MY IDOL – 1 BUZET – 5 SOLID IMPACT
These ‘Division One’ Class 5 events are becoming very strong form-wise with recent Class droppers ready to fire up against horses with winning form from easier races. In fact we have three last start winners taking part and all have to be respected with SOLID IMPACT probably the pick of the bunch. However, I have looked elsewhere for the winner with the likes of EXCELLENT BEAUTY, HIS MY IDOL and BUZET all ready to win back in this company. You can make a strong case for all three but I like the fact EXCELLENT BEAUTY has been so close to winning in what have looked unsuitable Poly races, so she looks a huge show back on the turf with the extra ground a bonus. HIS MY IDOL showed last start that he wins very soon in Class 5 and with Saimee on board from gate two, he looks the nominal favourite and obviously right in this. I also like BUZET on what he showed first up in this Class and he might just be the value runner of the race. I think he very much appreciates the step up in distance and can win on a repeat of that effort with 3kg claim a factor. Plenty of others that could play a part and while disappointing to be unplaced at seven runs thus far, ROMAN EMPIRE will appreciate the handicap conditions and the company in Class 5 and is worth one more look.
1 BUZET *** Drawn awkwardly but first up run was terrific and step up in distance ideal – can win. 12
2 HIS MY IDOL *** Did everything bar win first run dropping to Class 5 and hard to beat with gate two a bonus. 3.00
3 JAMIE * Last couple of runs have been better but this is a tough Class 5 field and needs to show more. 50
4 ROMAN EMPIRE ** Disappointing last start but might find Class 5 to his liking – one more chance. 6.00
5 SOLID IMPACT *** Won too well last start not to think he handles the step up in weight and will be in this a very long way again. 8.00
6 WIN LOTS *** Won over what looked an unsuitable distance last start and have to follow up to his pet 1400m. 6.00
7 EXCELLENT BEAUTY *** Another who has been showing too much of late in seemingly unsuitable races and must be a huge winning show back on turf over extra 200m. 6.00
8 TIEN CHAI *** Shown at his last couple he is a very solid each way option and usually some value. 15
9 ABYSS ** Best form on the Poly over shorter and skinny end of exotics do look best with blinkers removed. 30
10 DEBONAIR ** Showed a return to form last start and a must for exotics. 30
11 DEN ** Honest enough and could run a bold race with blinkers added from gate one. 40
12 LOOK AT ME ** In form but meets a tougher Class 5 field today and would need to be at his best to win. 12
13 SALVAGENTE * Goes OK on his day and no weight on his back but should find this field too tough. 30

Race 2

Selections; 3 CALOMBARIS – 13 GRAND WOOD PARK – 9 YIN XIN – 6 HEARTS
A very interesting Maiden as, apart from the fact that we have a few smart raced types that have shown enough to think they can win very soon, we also have what looks a very solid supporting cast of newcomers. While HEARTS, for J Saimee and trainer Steven Lam, looks to have the biggest chance on debut from trial form (and a kind barrier), I have CALOMBARIS, YIN XIN and the EA, GRAND WOOD PARK, as the horses to beat. But when you consider that CALOMBARIS was beaten by a subsequent Novice winner in POPI POPI on debut, the Cliff Brown-trained 4YO looks the one to be on. Add the fact he was heavily supported and it was a long way back to the third horse and you would expect support again and a very big run. He has drawn awkwardly but happy to think that might encourage a very positive ride from jockey Danny Beasley. YIN XIN has done nothing wrong (apart from salute the judge) at his two race starts, and the form from those races looks to be holding up. While he no doubt runs another forward race from gate two and a top three finish is likely, I will be entertaining the emergency, GRAND WOOD PARK as she has certainly done enough to warrant respect and very much appreciates the better gate today. Of the other newcomers, I will be keeping an eye on the tote for RED SENSATION and THE CARDINAL with MIGHTY CREATION some hope on his great trial form with any luck from the bad gate.
1 RED GLORY ** Will improve with each run this campaign but will need to be at his best after drawing badly today. 30
2 SWITCH DOUBLEMISTY ** Last start was easily his best and pay to keep safe in exotics. 40
3 CALOMBARIS *** Just beaten on debut with heavy support by a subsequent Novice winner – daylight third that day and very hard to beat in this. 2.30
4 DEVONSHIRE ** Solid enough at the trials to keep safe in exotics but might benefit from the run. 30
5 DUELLO ** Solid enough at Official trials but would need to lift to play a part on debut. 40
6 HEARTS *** Looked to be doing it easy winning Official trial and should go well on debut with market a good guide. 7.00
7 RED SENSATION ** Drawn a tad awkwardly for debut and while has looked OK at the trials he will need a few things to go his way. 12
8 THE CARDINAL ** A couple of solid trials under his belt and another newcomer who could show something on debut. 15
9 YIN XIN *** Only found one better (just) at two starts and right in this. 3.00
10 MR MAFEI * Very hard to have. 100
11 MIGHTY CREATION ** Looked well held winning Official trial and must be respected with light weight but widest gate on debut a big concern. 12
12 MONTE CRISTO ** Solid at a couple of Official trials and worth including in exotics with light weight on debut. 40
13 GRAND WOOD PARK *** Never involved until big effort late last start from bad gate and will be a huge show in this if she gets a start – WATCH. 5.00
14 TERRA FIRMA ** Best work late last start a very good sign but that was over the mile and might find this too short. 40

.

Race 3

Selections; 2 WINONTOP – 5 THRILLA IN MANILA – 1 KALLISAN – 4 BLACK JACK
A few very honest Class 4 sprinters in this field suggesting a truly run race and a cracker of a finish. But while the likes of THRILLA IN MANILA, KALLISAN, BLACK JACK and SULMONA all play a part, WINONTOP looks a horse to follow through the grades and can win today. The CALIFORNIAN DANE 3YO raced green on debut (2nd) before blinkers added had him winning his next two for an impressive start to what should be a very good career. The fact he broke his maiden status with a tough win and then backed it up by beating a smart type in IP MAN suggest he has more to offer and happy to be on him today. As mentioned, he is up against some very solid Class 4 types with THRILLA IN MANILA the biggest danger. The AREXEVAN sprinter has been the model of consistency without a win of late but worth noting Moreira has an excellent record on the 6Y0 winning at his last two rides. KALLISAN is also right in this and her record of a win and four placings from seven Singapore starts suggests she is always worth following. Add BLACK JACK first up and the in-form SULMONA with tote best guide for the newcomer, GOOD SIBLING.
1 KALLISAN *** Honest and Class 4 suits – should be in this a very long way. 5.00
2 WINONTOP *** Beat a smart one last time out with daylight third – follow. 3.00
3 GOOD SIBLING ** Former Australian with solid enough form to think Class 4 suits and trial since arriving looked good – watch tote. 12
4 BLACK JACK *** Resuming, has ability and good first up form – keep safe. 8.00
5 THRILLA IN MANILA *** In terrific form without a result and will run a very forward race from gate four. 6.00
6 ATTORNEY GENERAL ** Won well from wide gate last start but this is tougher and might need a few favours in running. 7.00
7 BROWN SHADOW ** Ran on OK late last start which is a good sign but will need to lift again to play a part in this. 40
8 SULMONA *** Two runs this campaign have been good but will need some luck after drawing badly. 8.00
9 ZAC STAR DESTROYER ** Drops back in distance but a versatile type and form over shorter was good – keep safe at value. 30
10 ITISWHATITIS ** Form reads badly but last start back on turf better so this looks his preferred surface – skinny end of exotics at odds. 50
11 BATTLE STAR * Late DAYS OF THUNDER – resuming and prefer to watch first up after long break. 100
12 CAUTION ** Will be competitive in Class 4 with no weight but is a maiden and might prefer elsewhere. 30
13 GOOD DAY ** Always going to be coming into his own late but might just be looking at Class 5. 30

.

Race 4

Selections; 1 GIVE WAY – 4 ACE ADALID – 13 GOOD BOSS – 12 TORMENTA
After being beaten narrowly on debut as an odds-on pop, it has looked as if ACE ADALID has never really recovered with only one more placing to show from his next six starts. The fact that he trials well and has support (often heavy) on most occasions he races has him in the book as a horse to avoid at all costs. But he has found a very soft race to try and turn that run of outs around. If he is to win any time soon it is most likely today. But throwing good money after bad is not something we encourage so while I think he is the one to beat, GIVE WAY gets my nod as the on-top selection. The KASHANI 5YO has had two runs in Singapore since arriving from NZ and the fact he trailed well before being more than competitive in Class 4 company suggests he is a serious chance in this. In saying that, he has to overcome a bad gate, top weight and an out-of sorts jockey (although Chavez did knock in a much needed win last weekend), so he will need to be at his best. You could throw a blanket over the rest with GOOD BOSS (first emergency), TORMENTA, ANIWA and FEELING GOOD all some hope in what looks just a fair maiden field.
1 GIVE WAY *** Showed enough last start to think he very much appreciates maiden company after a couple of Class 4 runs in Singapore – big show. 4.50
2 TAI COMMANDS ** Former Kiwi who might need longer to show his best – later. 20
3 MAGIC OCEAN ** First up run good enough to think he has come back improved for the break – keep safe. 12
4 ACE ADALID *** Disappoints more often than not with support but always going to play some part and this field is not strong. 2.70
5 HOPEUDONMIND ** Usually thereabouts and appreciates the inside gate but exotics looks his caper. 20
6 MONSOON BREAK * Good work late last start but that was over the mile so happy to just watch today for new trainer with blinkers removed. 50
7 ONE ON ONE ** Form reads badly but appreciates drop back to easier company and senior hoop a factor – keep safe at value. 20
8 ANIWA *** Showed enough improvement of late to think he can play a part in a race with no stand-out. 8.00
9 NAPOLEON B ** Will improve with each run this campaign but exotics look best. 20
10 VERSAILLES PALACE ** Very much appreciates first up run and goes good enough on his day to include somewhere. 12
11 FEELING GOOD *** Another who goes well enough on his day and improves for the first up run – keep very safe with blinkers back on. 10
12 TORMENTA *** Mixes his form but has looked ready for a result and recent trial was solid – some hope. 12
13 GOOD BOSS *** Did it tough last start and happy to take on his better form in what looks a very suitable race with nice gate handy. 9.00
14 SWIFT RACER *** Did it tough last start and form has looked OK – keep safe when he gets a start. 9.00

.

Race 5

Selections; 8 SUPER EASY – 1 MR RAFFLES – 4 MOONLITE SHOWER – 2 AMADEUS MOZART
SUPER EASY has lived up to both his name and NZ juvenile reputation since arriving in Singapore this year. And while he never got to run as a 2YO, the DARCI BRAHMA colt has done more than enough at two starts as a 3YO to be the one to beat today. That is no mean feat given the opposition he meets in this Class 2 event, but the way he won both his races thus far, he will be favourite and justifiably so. But MR RAFFLES also has some quality about him and while being disappointing not winning of late, he showed first up behind POWERFUL TREE he has returned in great form and warrants respect. In fact, he looks very well suited back on the turf with that run under his belt and goes mighty close for Vlad Duric from gate one. With SUPER EASY and MR RAFFLES in the field, MOONLITE SHOWER might just be the value runner and with a career record of five wins and three places form nine starts, he can win. Like SUPER EASY, the Don Baertschiger rising-star does step up in Class but his form speaks for itself and he is worth a look. Throw the proverbial blanket over the other runners with the tough, underrated, AMADEUS MOZART a fair option for exotics.
1 MR RAFFLES *** First up run was very impressive and can win back on what looks his better surface. 5.00
2 AMADEUS MOZART *** Doesn’t win out of turn but always thereabouts – each way at value. 12
3 DITTATORE ** Appreciates two runs back but a better winning option on the Poly. 25
4 MOONLITE SHOWER *** Record of five wins and three placings from nine career starts suggest he is smart and handles the step up to this company – follow. 5.00
5 SQUALL LINE ** Resuming and while he looks a better option this company on the Poly his recent trial slick and worth a look in exotics. 40
6 WILLIAMS ** Just keeps stepping up in any company and while a win would very much surprise he is worth a look skinny end of exotics. 20
7 MY SON ** Going to appreciate the light weight and while a step up in Class he is good enough to be competitive. 30
8 SUPER EASY *** Won his first two in Singapore comfortably with heavy support suggesting he more than handles this company with no weight – hard to beat. 1.50

.

Race 6

Selections; 2 STARZL – 1 SRIJANA – 6 NOBLE KNIGHT – 5 NEWA WAGAMAMA
There looks to be plenty of winning chances in this Class 5 (division 2) event and while others, like SRIJANA, look more obvious on form, I have gone for an improver and hopefully value in STARZL. The recent form for the DEHERE 5YO looks ordinary (and that’s being kind) but there was enough to like about his last start in this company to think he will be more than competitive back in Class 5. But more importantly, he has blinkers on for the first time and his
recent trial with headgear was good enough to think Vlad Duric and trainer Bruce Marsh could be looking at an upset result. These Class 5 races often throw up an ‘improver’ but those looking at horses ready to win should look no further than SRIJANA who is not only in good form, but has found an ideal race (both his wins over 1400m turf). Throw in NOBLE KNIGHT (who finally gets to jump from a good gate) as a serious winning chance and a host of others including ZINLY at start 104 and TAKESHI to name but two. Go very wide in exotics as this looks a raffle!
1 SRIJANA *** Showed at his last two that he is ready to win again in Class 5 and hard to beat over his winning distance. 3.50
2 STARZL *** Form obviously reads badly but significant drop in Class couple with blinkers on first time suggests big improvement – WATCH. 20
3 VENICE * Showed some improvement with the addition of head gear but still needs to do more before we consider. 50
4 ZINLY *** Veteran galloper who looks to have another win left in him and right in what is a very suitable race. 10
5 NEWA WAGAMAMA ** Always thereabouts but needs to make good use of gate one to be a winning threat. 15
6 NOBLE KNIGHT *** Had a shocking run of bad gates to contend with of late so very much appreciates the nice alley and 3kg claim – big show. 5.00
7 CHAN’S ELECTRA *** In form and worth noting only win was over this distance – goes close. 4.00
8 SIR RUMBLE ** More bad runs of good these days but this type of race was his caper and always pay to keep safe. 30
9 AETON ** Just fair last couple on the Poly but should improve back on winning surface. 30
10 TAKESHI *** Last start better than the result and should break maiden status very soon – right in this. 6.00
11 DOLCE VITA *** Never really involved from bad gate until good work late last start – form prior to that has him winning soon. 12
12 DUNFALOS * No. 100

.

Race 7

Selections; 4 MONTEREY – 1 SUPERCZAR – 7 LOCKDOWN – 3 ILUMINADO
While the race will throw up a surprise or two in running, with early pace a key to a few of these horses chances, MONTEREY should get all the favours from gate one and has to the form to knock in another win. The SCENIC 6YO has shown more than enough in this company to win on his day and the race – with no real Poly specialist or form stand-out – looks ideal. Of the others, I think SUPERCZAR has the runs on the board with nine wins from his 58 career starts and is the biggest danger dropping back to this easier company. In fact, he won last time out in a similar event (January – Class 3 1700m) and his form since then, including a win over 1400m in Class 2 and some fair efforts in strong fields, has him winning again very soon. Pat Shaw always seems to play a hand in races like this and his two runners in LOCKDOWN and ILUMINADO will be right in this with RAW COURAGE the improver after his very tough Singapore debut.
1 SUPERCZAR *** Been in good company since last win and this looks very suitable to get back to his best – watch. 6.00
2 KING FAALCON ** While he has won a similar affair this look too short to be at his best and place preferred. 20
3 ILUMINADO ** Always thereabouts and keeps a few honest late. 5.00
4 MONTEREY *** More than enough to like about his last start to think he runs a big race here – gate one handy. 3.00
5 RAW COURAGE ** Improves on what was a very tough Singapore debut run – watch tote. 9.00
6 QUINTA DE LAGO ** Steps up after gutsy Class 4 win and while this is obviously tougher it would pay to respect. 10
7 LOCKDOWN *** Has been more than competitive in this company and step up in distance looks a very good move – big show. 4.00
8 MULAN ** Won a weak maiden last start but it was over a mile on the Poly so should be competitive from gate two. 20
9 LUCKY SUN * Grand old campaigner but Class 5 looks his caper these days and happy to wait. 50
10 AFFIRMATION * Very disappointing of late and reassess when he gets to easier company. 50

.

Race 8

Selections; 9 SUPER RETURN – 11 NEW ESPERANZA – 3 WONDER GENERAL – 5 AL NADER
A poor field and very hard to be confident of finding the winner. The fact that no horse did better than fourth at their respective last starts makes even finding a good each-way option tough, so the dividend board might be a good a guide as any. But while I will be keeping horses like AL NADER and WONDER GENERAL safe (and a close eye on stable support), SUPER RETURN looked good enough at a recent trial with blinkers added to think he can get back to his best form. He has drawn awkwardly but Oscar Chavez should have ample time to find a position from the 1400m chute and, given he has had two runs under his belt since a bleeding attack last May, can show up at odds. NEW ESPERANZA certainly has the most solid form leading into this and might be the best each-way option on the card. He has yet to win a race from 24 starts but surprising is honest and is right in this. As mentioned, I will be keeping WONDER GENERAL and AL NADAR safe but the winner could come from anywhere and it will pay to go very wide in exotics.
1 LUCKY FUJI * Struggling. 100
2 BOLD OF LOVE ** Resuming but shows enough on the odd occasion to include in exotics for value. 50
3 WONDER GENERAL *** Query over turf and 1400m form but not a lot of opposition and can win on ability alone. 7.00
4 VIPER MAN ** Has been disappointing in nine starts thus far but his last effort was his best and can finish on-board in what is an ordinary race. 12
5 AL NADER *** Plenty of chances since dropping to Class 5 and hasn’t delivered but has four wins to his name – all turf – and that counts for plenty in this type of field. 6.00
6 CHENGDU WARRIOR ** Has been disappointing after nice enough effort four starts back (over this distance) and only for the brave. 15
7 SHUTTLE EXPRESS *** Freshened after bad run from wide gate with support – drawn badly again but have to respect on best form. 6.00
8 MOOVA EIGHT * Late HANGOVER. Raced handy last start for same result and easier to ignore. 30
9 SUPER RETURN *** Appreciates two runs back and a lot to like about his recent trial with blinkers added – WATCH. 10
10 TOP HAPPINESS *** Resuming with blinkers downgraded to winkers and certainly showed enough last campaign to keep safe first up. 8.00
11 NEW ESPERANZA *** Still a maiden but has the form to win this with gate one and blinkers back on factors – big show. 4.00
12 GOLD POOL *** Doesn’t win often but always thereabouts and must be respected. 8.00
13 JUS BEAT IT *** Not a lot last start but form prior has him winning a race like this. 9.00

.

Race 9

Selections; 7 RAGING STORM – 4 ABEYANT – 5 IMACRUISER – 9 RISING EXPECTATION
As you would expect in Class 3, a very solid field with good form to follow. But while I had a second look at the likes of ABEYANT, IMACRUISER, RISING EXPECTATION and ARADEA, the Stephen Gray-trained RAGING STORM looks a stand-out. The relatively lightly-raced 6YO has put together a fair CV of two wins and five places from his 15 Singapore starts, but it was his two recent runs since a six-month spell that has him winning today. Both those efforts, the most recent a second behind the smart SUPER EASY, have suggested he is ready to show his best and looks the one the others have to beat in this. Of course, a horse like ABEYANT, who also looks to have come back in fine order after a long break, has to be respected, as does the consistent IMACRUISER who keeps them all honest (although wide gate a concern). A good race but RAGING STORM a big winning show.
1 KALASH ** Always thereabouts, often in good company, but a result is overdue. 10
2 LAGO BAY * Rarely seen on the turf and probably for good reason. 30
3 ARADEA *** Backed up tough win (dead-heat) with a solid effort last start – always a show and might be value. 10
4 ABEYANT *** In super form and gets a few favours here from gate two in what is a very winnable race. 4.00
5 IMACRUISER *** Super consistent and while he doesn’t win as often as he should, he goes close here with nice first up run under his belt. 4.00
6 MARCUSINO ** Resuming after nice enough Class 4 win with support – this is obviously tougher but exotics OK from gate one. 30
7 RAGING STORM *** Super effort behind a very nice type last time out suggests he is ready to win – big show. 3.00
8 BIG GALLANT ** Winkers added after ordinary effort last time out – running out of chances to show his best. 12
9 RISING EXPECTATION *** Continued excellent run of form last time out similar affair – nearly always value – and pay to follow. 20
10 SWAGGER ** Disappointing last couple on the Poly but run three starts back on turf was good so look for improvement. 20
11 DYNAMIC DAN ** Going to be coming into his own late but might be needing easier than this to win. 50

.

Race 10

Selections; 8 CAN BE BETTER – 3 TZAR – 11 SPEEDY DWARF – 7 BIG FORTUNE
While it seems obvious to stick with those with winning Class 4 form – WOJCINSKI, EL MILAGRO and TZAR – the race form runs deeper than that and hopefully, with value in mind in what is an even field, CAN BE BETTER is my on-top selection. The Stephen Gray-trained 4YO was never involved at his last start from a bad gate, so happy put a line through that and take on the potential he showed at his debut win and a couple of placings from just six starts. Add blinkers first time, Vlad Duric and gate two and the FOREPLAY gelding (tell me that doesn’t make sense) is a big chance to show his best and win. Of the three last start winners I thought TZAR had the best chance of going back-to-back after drawing gate one. All three horses won impressively but TZAR might just get the favours needed in this tough field and that will count for plenty late. With so many chances, a few of these might be value and the likes of SPEEDY DWARF – impressive last start in this company – might just get out to very backable odds – WATCH. Of the rest, keep Joao Moreira safe on the improving BIG FORTUNE; BEAT TO QUARTERS has ability (watch tote first up) and RIEZO improves for what was a very hard Singapore debut run.
1 WOJCINSKI *** In form with two wins from his last three and must be respected staying in Class 4. 6.00
2 EL MILAGRO *** Last start win full of authority and hard to argue with two from two – big show. 3.00
3 TZAR *** Another last start winner in similar company and gets a few favours from gate one – watch. 4.50
4 REEL SCHMICK ** Disappointing last couple but better than that and might show improvement fresh. 30
5 RIEZO ** Did it super tough at Singapore debut so the run better than it looked – keep safe with improvement likely. 30
6 BEAT TO QUARTERS ** Smart enough type resuming sans blinkers and while gate makes winning tough today it will pay to follow. 15
7 BIG FORTUNE *** Big effort late last start with excuses in running suggest he is very much ready to get back into winning form. 7.00
8 CAN BE BETTER *** Forget last start when never involved from the wide gate and seriously consider on ability shown with blinkers added first time. 12
9 MARKET ON OPEN ** Has issues last run so happy to forgive but need to be at his best. 30
10 MY NEW BOSS ** Didn’t quite back up his maiden win but worth another chance as he will be more than competitive this company. 20
11 SPEEDY DWARF *** Showed last start he handles the grade no problem and goes close on that good effort. 8.00
12 WICKET * Goes OK on his day but might be needing Class 5 on what we have seen of late. 100
13 WOLFSBANE ** Did it tough last start and never a show but happy to follow at odds on what he showed two starts back. 40
14 DRUNKEN HERO ** Disappointing last start but can include in exotics on good first run this company. 20
