The Dean And Karl Show

The Dean And Karl Show

Durbanville 20th July: Wednesday’s meeting at the country course was dominated by Karl Neisius and Dean Kannemeyer. They had four winners together whilst Karl took his tally to five with a win on JET INTO THE WIND.

They set the ball rolling in the opening maiden juvenile event over 1300m where we saw a very impressive performance from the favourite ADMIRAL JOHN PETER (30). Soon into stride, the son of Captain Al was very quickly nicely positioned in second. He was asked to take up the running shortly after passing the 400m marker and was striding away some four lengths clear before being eased down late to win by just a length and a quarter. Stable companion SYLVESTER finished well to take second, but was clearly flattered by his proximity to the winner.

In terms of distance, the easiest victory on the card was recorded by BERMUDA SLOOP (18) when opening her account in the maiden juvenile event over 1600m. Not surprisingly well supported to win the third race on the card after the combination of Dean Kannemeyer and Karl Neisius had landed the first two, Bermuda Sloop adopted similar tactics to those of Admiral John Peter and cruised clear to win by seven.

Another to win particularly well from the stable was the newcomer ALULA BOREALIS (8) in the maiden event over 1400m. Confidently ridden by the in form Neisius, the Go Deputy colt raced in midfield for most of the journey. Once in the straight though he quickened well, and after striking the front 200m from home, he easily drew clear.

A MR94 Handicap over 1400m topped the bill and here we saw a very comfortable victory for the Piet Steyn trained MASTER BARRY (50). One leaving the stalls it was the 3yo CAP ALRIGHT who elected to make the running whilst in a strung out field the 7/2 second favourite Master Barry (op 4/1) raced some three lengths away in second. He was ridden to lead as they approached the 200m marker and although the friendless MKOMBOZI (10/1 out to 20/1) finished well from midfield, he went on to score without any anxious moments by a length and a half.

Titbits

TERRY LISTER was finishing best of all before running into a brick wall 100m from home in the race won by Jet Into The Wind.

Although never close enough to get in a blow at the winner Master Barry, SABATINO caught the eye running on very nicely from the rear to take fourth.

Promising Early Double

Scottsville 21st July: The Dynasty filly HAPPY HEART (9) was sent off a very strong favourite to win the opening maiden juvenile event in Natal on Thursday and she didn’t let down her supporters. Deep in the red at 9/20 on the off, Dennis Drier’s charge was soon positioned close to the speed. She was ridden to lead at the 400m marker and only having to be pushed out hands and heels from there onwards, she went on to score very comfortably by three and a half.

The stable of Dennis Drier were also on the mark in the boys division of the maiden juvenile 1200m when TIPO TINTO (33) did the business. Holding on to his position at the top of the boards (15/10 into 14/10) despite heavy support for Alec Laird’s newcomer BEARING GIFTS (10/1 into 15/10), Tipo Tinto was soon up handy. He began to assert his authority going through the 400m and although the money horse chased hard in the latter stages of the race, he too won very cosily by three and a half.

Race four on the card was a maiden event over 1950m and here we saw a smart performance from the only 2yo in the field TASTE OF HONEY (36). Freely available at 11/2 on the off, Sean Tarry’s charge raced fourth for most of the journey. She quickened well at the top of the straight and after striking the front 250m from home, she easily drew clear.

The afternoon’s feature event was a MR95 Handicap over 1200m and in a race where just five went to post, victory here went to the Yogis Govender trained BURAGH (68). Another on the card to win at cramped odds, Buragh was content to sit some three lengths off the leaders during  the early part of the race. He began to take closer order as they approached the 400m pole and after striking the front 200m later, he comfortably accounted for the second favourite HOT ROCKET by a length.

Titbits

SOVEREIGN SOUND only got going really late in the MR78 Handicap over 1200m and given a few more metres to travel would surely have gotten up.

MISS DIANA was finishing best of all when fourth in the MR74 affair over 1950m.

Flying Late

Arlington 22nd July: Followers of the money got off to a nice start in Port Elizabeth on Friday when the well supported ROYALE MART (14) did the business in the opening maiden juvenile event over 1000m. Backed into 9/2 from 7/1, the son of Martinelli was soon up with the speed. He began to assert his authority going through the 300m and although the fancied BLACK THUNDER (11/2 into 9/2) chased hard and had the rest well beaten, he went on to score comfortably by a length and three quarters.

Another to win well in the maiden ranks on this card was KENSINGTON GORE (18) who aided Anton Marcus’ bid to retain his national jockey’s title when winning the 1400m event. He got away well when the gates opened and always close to the pace against his mainly older rivals was perfectly placed to strike. He hit the front shortly after passing the 400m marker and although the ultra consistent place getter CRIMSON TIDE ran on stoutly from midfield in the closing stages of the race, he came home lonely by three.

Race six on the card was a MR78 Handicap over 2400m and in what proved to be a real thriller victory here went to the former Cape Town campaigner GOLDEN RUSE (52). Ridden by title chasing jockey Anthony Delpech, Golden Ruse raced towards the rear for most of the journey. He ran on particularly well down the short home straight, as did both GREY EAGLE and GREAT HEART. Grey Eagle actually hit the front 250m out, but finishing best of all under a determined ride from Delpech, Golden Ruse got up in the dying strides.

A Pinnacle Stakes over 1000m topped the bill and here it was nice to see the 4yo BANDOL (85) back to his speedy best. Racing for only the second time in 2011 here, Yvette Bremner’s charge was soon in his favourite position at the head of affairs. He kept up a healthy gallop throughout and although the veteran KINGS TROOP did make some headway in the latter stages of the race, he went on to score without any anxious moments.

Titbits

Running on from the car park, the aptly named COUNT MY LUCK was fairly flying in the latter stages of the MR72 Handicap over 1600m and did well to get within a length and a quarter of the winner.

After being very slow into stride, PRIMARY TREND did amazingly well to win the MR64 Handicap over 1400m.

2 v 2 Draw

Turffontein 23rd July: The first of champion jockey Anton Marcus’ two victories at the old stand side track on Saturday came in the maiden event over 1800m when SILVER DICE (26) got off the mark. Backed into favouritism at the track (28/10 into 22/10), the son of Silvano got away well when the gates opened and was soon up handy. He was ridden to lead early in the long home straight and staying on gamely at the business end of the race he went on to score very easily by five and a quarter.

The easiest victory in the maiden ranks on this card though was undoubtedly that of VENTURE (43) who came home lonely in the 2450m event. Confidently ridden by Gavin Lerena, the 3yo son of National Emblem was positioned towards the rear for most of the trip. When given rein at the top of the home straight though, he quickly began to work his way through the field. He hit the front 400m out and although ATMOSPHERIC chased hard and had the rest well behind him, Venture went on to win going away by six and a half.

Anthony Delpech also rode two winners on this card and the first of these was ELODIE (54) in the MR86 handicap over 2000m. Racing for the first time since February, Elodie sat sixth during the early part of the race. She ran on nicely in the straight and after striking the front 200m out, she comfortably accounted for AFRICAN ICON by a half. Perhaps a little unlucky in this event was QUEEN MIRA. Running on from the back, Geoff Woodruff’s charge was hampered by Elodie 100m out.

A MR88 Handicap over 2000m topped the bill and here we saw another smart performance from the unbeaten S’IL VOUS PLAIT (51). Backed into 6/10 from even money at the track, Ormond Ferraris’ charge made his move early after racing in midfield and struck the front 500m out. He quickly went clear and despite the efforts of the running on BAMBELELA, he won well by two and a half.

Titbits

Out of her ground at the back as the twelve runners turned for home in the maiden juvenile event over 1600m, SACRED TEMPLE ran on best of all, but quite simply had too much to do.
