Sherman Goes Home – Set For Lengthy Recovery

Three months plus before he could ride again

Jockey Sherman Brown is likely to be discharged from hospital today after he was airlifted from the Vaal on Tuesday, following his mount Crown Plaza appearing to clip heels around the 50 m marker in the seventh race.

The 47 year old jockey was admitted to the Alberton Hospital with spinal and rib fractures.

Sherman puts on a brave smile on Friday evening

He sent thanks to well-wishers from his hospital bed on Friday evening and said he was looking forward to going home.

JASA’s Tex Lerena, who visited Sherman, told the Sporting Post that injury was an occupational hazard for any jockey and the fact that a rider could walk and talk after any accident was ‘a win’.

“Sherman looks brighter, although he is obviously still in pain. He is confined to wearing a brace and will be undergoing regular checks and therapy over the next few months. It is likely to be longer than 3 months before he can even consider a return to the saddle. For now it’s patience and recovery. We wish him the very best,” added the former jockey.
