Carry On Alice for Cape Flying Championship on Sun Met Day

SA champion trainer Sean Tarry and his team had another outstanding day on Saturday, with all but one of the yard’s runners either winning or finishing in the money.

The Tarry yard were represented by no fewer than four winners on Saturday, with three runners scoring at the Vaal and impressive 2yo Barrrack Street making a winning debut at Kenilworth.

Three other Tarry trained runners finished second on the day, with another two from the yard filling the fourth berth in their respective races.

Bred by Klawervlei Stud, Barrack Street showed pace right from the jump in the 800m juvenile dash and stayed on for a one and a quarter length win for owners Mayfair Speculators and Chris Van Niekerk.

A R500 000 purchase from the 2016 CTS Ready To Run Sale, Barrack Street looks a most exciting prospect – especially as his breeding (he is a Dynasty half brother to Equus Champion and successful sire Jay Peg among others) suggest he needs much further than the 800m!

Barrack Street will now be aimed at the CTS sponsored R1 000 000 race, to be run on Sun Met day.

This race looks to be one of the reasons that Cape Town’s 2yo races have attracted such strong turn outs. Long may it continue!

Australian bred Lute Society has clearly benefitted from a recent gelding operation – as his two and a quarter length win over 1200m at the Vaal indicates.

Owned by Chris Van Niekerk, Mayfair Speculators and Hassen Adams, the son of Epsom Derby star New Approach had put up a fair debut effort before proving very disappointing on his next racetrack appearance.

Well ridden by Collen Thabana, Lute Society looks capable of building on Saturday’s maiden win –even if he did not perhaps beat the strongest field around.

Owner Chris Van Niekerk has enjoyed a wonderful run of success of late, with his runners scoring all over the country, and Chris had another winner on Saturday in the form of Oracle Of Delphi –who was given a superb ride by Raymond Danielson to pick up his first win over 2000m.

Raymond timed his challenge to perfection, and got first run on favourite Air Force Legend. The favourite, however, did not go down without a fight, and fought out a tremendous duel with the Tarry runner  –w ith the Oracy sired runner getting the nod –it was another 11.75 lengths back to the third placed finisher.

Samurai Blade, who could be pointed to the G3 London News Stakes next, confirmed the merit of his last win when he won an allowance plate over 1800m (the race was delayed after lightning made racing unsafe).

Piere Strydom - three good winners

Piere Strydom – three good winners

One of three winners on the day for jockey Piere Strydom, last year’s G1 SA Derby third looks sure to provide owners Messrs Nestadt, Bott and Kantor with more success in the months to come.

The Australian bred Samurai Blade is a son of the young Storm Cat sire Where’s That Tiger, whose first South African crop sell as yearlings in 2017.

Where’s That Tiger has a tremendous strike rate with his handful of local representatives (nine runners to date –

which include four feature race contenders) in South Africa, and this well bred young sire (his dam is an own sister to a Kentucky Derby winner) looks an exciting addition to the South African stallion band.

Carry On Alice chases Jo’s Bond home in the Gr2 Southern Cross Stakes

Star sprinter Carry On Alice, beaten only by fellow Klawervlei bred Captain Al daughter Jo’s Bond, was not disgraced when second in the Gr2 CTS Southern Cross Stakes.

Tarry left plenty to work on, and the five-year-old, who could go next in either the Gr2 Sceptre or Gr2 Diadem Stakes, will now be aimed towards the Gr1 Betting World Cape Flying Championship on Sun Met day.

Tarry’s ongoing success owes a lot to the hard work done by the team back home –and to the many loyal and stalwart owners who ensure the yard continues to ride high.

The likes of Thabiso, Shylock, Andries, and Monique, in particular, put a lot of work into the stable and deserve a lot of credit for the yard’s ongoing success.

The SA champion trainer congratulated Phumelela and the NHA , who ensured that all but one of Saturday’s Vaal races went ahead – despite the racing once again being interrupted by an electric storm.
