Skins At Scottsville

Reflecting back on an experiment

In August 1991, Scottsville  staged its first ‘Skins’ meeting, loosely based on the concept successfuly used in golf.

Trainers, jockeys, owners, as well as punters – for them jockeys were  the key – had the opportunity to double up and up as the afternoon progressed.

The meeting was sponsored jointly by TopSport and the Daily News, and all races on the day were televised.

It was a pity that top jockeys Felix Coetzee, Robbie Sham and Jeff Lloyd (he rode a 4-timer at Clairwood the previous Saturday) all started suspensions earlier in the week, and were unable to ride on Skins-day.

Hero of the day was Kevin Shea, who collected R60 000 worth of skins, and also won the feature event, the Frank Lambert Stakes, on San Carlos.

The Scottsville Tote reached the near record level of R6,7 million on the day, with a record Pick Six pool of R637 000.
