An innovative ride by jockey Anthony Delpech and superior staying ability won the day for Glen Kotzen’s Dynasty gelding Alexander at Scottsville on Tuesday. The son of Dynasty registered his third win on the trot in fine style and looks a nice stayer in the making.
The Sporting Post cover selection went off at a rather generous 28 to 10 in a six horse field and punters obviously felt nervous about his ability to register a hat trick of wins against the likes of recent Gr1 placed stayer Knight To Remember and the bang in form Colin Scott’s, Sage Throne.
Piano Forest carted the field along in the 2600m Pinnacle Stakes from Happy Colours early but they weren’t going very fast.
Delpech took Alexander around his field to hasten things up at around the 1000m marker and as they went around the turn for home he kicked nicely.
Into the straight Delpech’s body language told the story as his mount showed smart ability building up his momentum as he strode clear, and looked to draw away from his five rivals.
Inside the 300m marker, his courage was put to the test and he came out on top when asked.
Knight To Remember and Sage Throne threw down their challenges as the line loomed but Alexander kicked again and went on to win cosily by 1,5 lengths in a time of 165,44 secs.
Knight To Remember stayed on for second, and should not be long in winning.
Alexander has now won 3 races and registered 3 places from his 15 starts and looks very progressive indeed. He has not been beaten since scoring a runaway maiden win and is one of the most improved horses around.
He was saddled by Frikkie Greyling out of the Glen Kotzen Summerveld sattelite yard.
He was bred by UK based Judy Brannigan and is by Dynasty out of the British bred Diesis mare , Scent From Above.
He will probably travel to the Cape for the Sizzling Summer Season, although we know that the local staying ranks are not endowed with huge prize money.
Pencil him in as one to watch!
