Saturday: Curtain Comes Down On British Grade 1 Programme

Doncaster first off at 14h30

The final Group 1 of the 2024 British Flat season takes place at Doncaster on Saturday with the running of the William Hill Futurity Trophy (15h40).

A field of eight high-class juvenile colts compete for one of the major juvenile contests of the season with winning connections pocketing £127,576.

Doncaster Racecourse

Run over the straight mile, track conditions are likely to remain soft.

Aidan O’Brien has an outstanding record in this race and relies on his recent Gr3 Autumn Stakes winner Delacroix. The Dubawi colt proved himself a smart performer at Newmarket a couple of weeks ago, impressing with how he battled in similar track conditions to narrowly prevail. He will need to improve further to feature here.

The James Owen trained Wimbledon Hawkeye heads the betting after a gallant second behind The Lion In Winter in the Acomb before a decisive victory in the Gr2 Royal Lodge at Newmarket last month.

He must be considered along with Irish raider Hotazhell. The John Harrington trained colt has won three of his five starts, including last time at the Curragh where he ran out a cosy winner of the Gr2 Beresford Stakes.

However, at the prices, the selection is the unbeaten Godolphin colt, Anno Domini currently 8/1 in the market.

Charlie Appleby landed this 12 months ago with Ancient Wisdom and he’ll be hopeful Anno Domini can follow up. The New Bay colt looked a bright prospect when making a winning debut over an extended six furlongs at Newbury in June. He was even more impressive on his next start in a seven-furlong Sandown novice, where despite carrying a penalty, was far too good for subsequent York scorer Windlord.

Earlier on the card, Bounty can provide Aidan O’Brien with success in the William Hill Prospect Stakes (14h30), a listed event for juveniles.

The colt by No Nay Never cruised to success at Naas a fortnight ago on yielding ground. Ryan Moore now rides this progressive sort who could have too much speed for Diego Ventura and Fast Track Harry; his two most likely rivals.
