A frightening fall at Kenilworth on Sunday has seen talented young jockey Sandile ‘Sanzi’ Mbhele emerge in plenty of pain, but with only bruises to show for the incident.
Approaching the 300m marker in the seventh race, Sandile’s right foot slipped out of his stirrup iron, resulting in him becoming severely unbalanced and being dislodged from Snaith runner, August Leaves.
Coastal Jockeys Association spokesman MJ Byleveld, confirmed to the Sporting Post on Sunday evening that his Durban-born colleague had been taken to hospital for x-rays and that he had just received confirmation that the young man had not suffered fractures.
“We are happy to report that, despite being in a lot of pain, Sandile thankfully escaped serious injury and any fractures and is fortunately only nursing bruises. On behalf of all of his colleagues, the CJA wishes him a speedy recovery and return to the saddle,” said Byleveld.
