Jockey Ryan Moore is facing the prospect of writing off the rest of the year as he recovers from a neck injury sustained in the stalls at Newmarket this month.
Britain’s three-time champion jockey has visited Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge for a series of checks and, although x-rays have returned clear, those closest to the rider believe he is steeling himself for a much longer absence than anticipated.
It is understood the teams at Coolmore and at Sir Michael Stoute’s yard in Newmarket are coming to terms with the likelihood of being without their main man until 2016.
Uncertainty has continued to surround a potential return date with Moore’s agent Tony Hind initially hinting at a matter of days and then the jockey’s father Gary indicating a month might be needed.
Following further contact with his family, the Racing Post last week ran a story suggesting an autumn return might not be out of the question and now it has emerged his layoff is set to stretch to the end of the year.
