On what could turn yet out to be a landmark day in his racing career, Richard Fourie produced a perfectly judged ride to get the best out of the Arundel family’s Whistle The Tune to win the R200 000 Hollywoodbets Super League Devon Air Stakes at an overcast Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday.
Now just two wins away from breaking the Anthony Delpech 334 season record mark, the opening feature on the Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge raceday proved a relatively straightforward task for Fourie on the Glen Kotzen trained filly, who tracked the Highveld raider and pacesetter You Bring Me Joy all the way around.
Hitting the front fairly early, Whistle The Tune (28-10) ran on to be a popular winner, beating the late-finishing Varvara (33-1) by 0,70 lengths in a time of 85,15 secs.
Dark Winter (4-1) was slightly slow away, but stayed on doggedly for third, a further 2,90 lengths away.
Richard Fourie said that he had taken Whistle The Tune out of the parade ring early as she was was nervous.
“I had nothing left to follow at the top of the straight, and she was looking at everything. They were chasing us late, but she had enough in reserve,” added the top jockey.
Owner Sandy Arundel said that on Whistle The Tune’s work in the week, they were quite confident of her winning.
A R140 000 Cape Yearling Sale purchase, the Oldlands Stud-bred winner is a daughter of Captain Of All (Captain Al) out of the unraced Vercingetorix mare, Penny Whistle.
Now a winner of 2 races with 2 places from 6 starts, Whistle The Tune took her stakes tally to R276 513.
The Mike de Kock charge Khetiwe’s Destiny was withdrawn from this race due to inflated TCO2 levels. Thankfully for her supporters, the tote favourite won.
