The question of the determination of champion status for trainers and jockeys in the regional awards were discussed by Paul Lafferty and James Goodman on Monday evening’s Winning Ways show.
They both expressed the hope that ‘common sense would prevail’.
Interestingly, Greg Cheyne and Justin Snaith were crowned Cape champion jockey and trainer respectively, despite Grant Van Niekerk and Mike Bass topping the local logs.
In the recent past, under the WPOTA system, the awards would have gone to Bass and van Niekerk, as the Western Cape performance logs were utilised.
However, the procedure was changed when the RA took over from WPOTA back in 2013.
The RA decided to base the awards on the National Log and the new rules have been in force from the 2013/14 season onwards.
Following on from that, the Champion Jockey award was decided on the leading Western Cape domiciled jockey per the National Log in respect of winners -jockey awards are always decided on number of winners.
Greg Cheyne finished 3rd on the National Log and he is thus Cape champion jockey.
In terms of the Champion Trainer title, it was awarded to the leading Western Cape domiciled trainer as per the National Log in respect of stakes and Justin Snaith finished 3rd on the National Log behind Tarry and De Kock, making him the Cape champion trainer.
Here are the results.
