With almost three months of competition behind them, and feature races looming large on the horizon, here’s a look at how the current crop of juveniles shapes.
The official handicapper, as usual, leaves us in the dark until near the end of the season – that’s in July. Just as well, probably, if silly forum-discussions about rating young horses are to be avoided – or, worse, the introduction of even sillier handicapping ‘exception’ rules at the NHRA.
So we’ll go first. Balls on the block. Can’t wait.
Sporting Post’s ability ratings have been calibrated to tie in with all members of the 3yo crops in the three major centres.
There’s a split by sex, but otherwise the classes of ’07 and ’08 are completely compatible at weight-for-age. The 2yo’s shown below are those on file with ratings of 80+. They are bound to become multiple winners as time goes on.

The names of the sires of the 2yo’s on the list makes for interesting reading (and fun, too, if you have opinions about ‘failed’ or unfashionable stallions). For further interest, the local first-season sires are shown with an asterisk.
