It gets better every year. The riders at the gallops. The preparation of the young horses for their first public gallops. The quality of the catalogue. The prize money for the Ready To Run Cup (raise the bar – get it?). The comments from the panel of judges.
The Ready to Run gallops at Summerhill last week proved most of these points. Great riders, great gallopers, great pedigrees. The panel of judges (who, as rumour has it, know what they’re talking about) proved remarkably unanimous. They didn’t have a clue when it came to the fillies, and they stood as one behind two remarkable colts – a Fastnet Rock and a Tale Of The Cat. About the first Jehan Malherbe remarked “I’ve been trying to buy one in Euros all this year, and never got close. It’ll be a pleasure, for once, to bid for one in Rand”. For judge’s selections and overall impressions, check the judge’s box elsewhere in this issue.
All that said, the Sale-with-Race concept has South Africa in its grip. First there was one, the Original (the Emperors Palace Ready To Run, this very one). Now there are three, a yearling one in KZN launched last July, and a new 2yo one in the Cape, launching in December. The concept is great, as you don’t have to buy the best horse in the country to score. Just buying the best from one single sale is enough to boost the bankroll big time. And if by chance the best horse at the sale also is among the best in the country, then the sky is the limit. As Emperors Palace gradautes Igugu and Pierre Jourdan showed. Earning the accolades, one bar after another.
Studying the catalogue is a must. Guessing precocity, staying ability, racing ability. Pedigree counts, too. KAREL MIEDEMA lends a helping hand with the latter, and as usual unearths a nugget of two in the summary-by-sire that follows.
