In a generous gesture to raise much needed funds, the dynamic African Betting Clan has raised R15 000 for the Highveld Horse Care Unit. The cheque will be handed over by ABC proprietor Dave Scott at a function in the next few weeks.

The ABC is South Africa’s largest horseracing chat forum platform, and while its popularity is not always acknowledged by officialdom, it has continued to provide a source of debate and a natural vent for industry news and general frustrations. Dave Scott said that Singapore Turf Club’s Debbie Hawkins arranged to have caps signed by Joao “Magic” Moreira after his record breaking 8 from 8 on 6 September at Kranji racetrack. Debbie, formerly with Phumelela, is the Senior Manager for racehorse ownership at the STC.

“Many will remember Debbie Hawkins for her excellent attention to detail at the big T. I first met Debbie at the ‘rooms’in Bosman Street in Pretoria, and she has always been a passionate and positive friend of the sport,” said Scott. “A special thanks to the Clan members who have certainly put their money where their mouths are to give to this worthy cause. It is another special day for the Clan and thanks again to the sponsors who keep the site alive and kicking,” he added.

Hawkins has also arranged for a Moreira cap to be auctioned at the ECHCU Race Day and Auction ON 25 October. Among the great items up for auction are Animal Kingdom’s saddle cloth from the Kentucky Derby signed by Barry Irwin and connections and a saddle donated by Felix Coetzee. One of the organisers, Dorrie Sham said that bids would be accepted from those not there and that they would keep in touch on the night until the item is sold.

Bidding has already opened on the Joao Magic 8 cap at R1926. There are two available. The following fascinating items, are amongst those also being auctioned:

• Saddle belonging to Felix Coetzee with which he won 2 Mets and 2 Gold Cups. It is signed and authenticated by Felix.
• Animal Kingdom Kentucky Derby Saddle Cloth signed by connections.
• Signed Chelsea Football Club shirt
• Signed Liverpool FC ball
• Frankel pack including DVD, Book, photo, book on Sir Henry Cecil.
• 2 Beautiful racing pictures in pastels.
• Ryan Moore signature and photo of Ruler of the World Epsom Derby 2013 with signed Race Card.
• Royal Ascot race card signed by Aiden O Brien, Joseph O Brien, Jim Bolger, Gary Lineker, Tom Queally and more.

Also available are seats and tables at the races on Friday 25 October, which features the Listed RA Stakes. All profits from seat sales go to the ECHCU. Dorrie Sham said:

“We have a great party with live entertainment after the races, during which we have our auction. There is a Fun day on Saturday. The Gr3 Algoa Cup will be run on Sunday 27 October. A great weekend of racing and fun is on the cards and there is lots of space, so please join us here in PE.”
