Saturday’s Turffontein Guineas day meeting was a memorable afternoon for 17 year old Apprentice jockey Wayton van Staden, who rode the first winner of his career.
The diminutive and well spoken Van Staden was unsurprisingly all salutes and theatrics as he steered the Kum Naidoo trained Sheri Baby to a surprise 1,50 length win in the MR 76 Apprentice Handicap over 1000m.
Currently in his second year and having only his eighth race ride, Van Staden showed maturity and confidence as he produced Mayesh Chetty’s 5yo daughter of Secret Savings to win going away. While coupled with Figurine, the result was a Pick Six blow.
The young rider, who is based at the SA Jockey Academy in Summerveld KZN, said that he was thrilled to have his parents and family at the course to enjoy the moment with him. He also thanked Naidoo and trainer Duncan Howells for the opportunities given to him.
Van Staden, who lists Piere Strydom and former top jockey Stephen Jupp as his heroes, says that the best horses he has ridden include the Howells champion Via Africa, and Wood Be Magic and Singing River. When not racing, he enjoys swimming, soccer and motor cars.
