Racecourse Incident – Owner Guilty

Brought horseracing into disrepute

An incident at Hollywoodbets Greyville during the Boxing Day double feature racemeeting at the end of last year had a sequel this week when an owner signed an admission of guilt for a fine and the cancellation of his colour privileges.

The Sporting Post received video footage and reports of a disturbance at the Durban track on 26 December 2021. Gold Circle subsequently confirmed that an incident had occurred and that their security contractor and the SAPS were investigating.

Owner Patrick Kalil was found guilty by the National Horseracing Authority of the contravention of Rule 72.1.25 and 72.1.26, in that he conducted himself in an improper manner on the Hollywoodbets Greyville property and brought horse racing into disrepute.

Mr Kalil was involved in an altercation with security and various stakeholders, took alcohol into the parade ring, removed his shirt and took up a position on the Racecourse to postpone the continuation of the race meeting.

He was duly fined R10 000 and his colours were cancelled. This colours cancellation was wholly suspended for a period of five years, on condition that he is not found guilty of either of the same rules during this period.

The Sporting Post believes that Gold Circle earlier suspended Mr Kalil from attending KZN racemeetings for a period of six months.
