The brilliant Jet Master colt Master Of My Fate sent the expert doubting Thomases dashing for cover when winning the R400 000 Glorious Goodwood Gr2 Peninsula Handicap run over 1800m at Kenilworth on Saturday. Dennis Drier’s 4yo now looks set to take a well deserved place in the J&B Met lineup in a few weeks time.
After Master Of My Fate’s emphatic victory in the Gr2 Premier Trophy a month ago, there were those that suggested that he was at his top end over the final 200m and that he would not handle the 18 point accolade dished out by the handicapper.
Then in the preliminaries to this race, the dead ringer for his sire Jet Master ‘appeared above himself’ according to those in the know, and also gave regular pilot Sean Cormack a little to think about in the parade ring.
But besides all the energy sapping antics, he took over from the pacemaking Brown Penny early in the home straight and was confidently ridden by Sean Cormack to win his second Summer Of Champions feature on the trot.
Master Of My Fate handled the challenge with aplomb and won going away by 1,25 lengths in a time of 110,05 secs.
The well weighted Awesome Power ran on best for second, ahead of the nicely improved Punta Arenas who was a half length away in third.
Hill Fifty Four was in touch for most of the way, and stayed on tamely for fourth, while Hot Ticket remains a Met marginal with an eyecatching running on fifth from way back.
Bred by Varsfontein Stud, Master Of My Fate is by Jet Master out of the brilliant six time winning Elliodor mare, Promisefrommyheart.
She was top class and peaked with a victory in the 2004 Gr1 Triple Tiara 1600, beating the brilliant Ilha Da Vitoria.
Master Of My Fate was the top priced colt of the 2011 National Yearling Sale, being knocked down for R3 million
Master Of My Fate has now won 6 of his 7 starts with one second placer and R630 700 in stakes.
Trainer Dennis Drier and jockey Sean Cormack look to have plenty of options going into the summer highlight that is now just around the corner and the Met looks to be developing into a thriller!
