PSL

Preview

We’re about to get into the business end of the 2018/19 PSL season and our pundit predicts what the table will look like at the end of the campaign.

Orlando Pirates (33/10)

Orlando Pirates will finish the first half of the season in second place, behind Bidvest Wits who are one of the favourites. What makes me think that the mighty Buccaneers will finish strongly is the fact that they have a clear playing identity. The squad also has enough depth to see them through the season. The top of the table clashes will be the difference and I foresee their big match temperament coming to the fore. I’ll take that 33/10 any day.

Mamelodi Sundowns (2/1)

Alongside Bidvest Wits, Sundowns are priced up at 2/1 which makes them hot favourites for the title. The defending champions have a lot of games in hand and it would be difficult for them to juggle that with CAF Champions League clashes. We’ve also seen them slip up against lesser teams. I think they will do just about enough to finish in the top two but not going all the way.

Bidvest Wits (2/1)

Wits have a top coach who knows how to win the title! Gavin Hunt is not afraid to make big decisions and his ability to grind out results against small teams helps a great deal. However, I don’t think the players in his squad has enough experience to seriously challenge for the title, especially in the business end of the season. 2/1 for a team of such calibre which has lost seasoned campaigners such as Daine Klate and Moeneeb Josephs is not worth taking.

Kaizer Chiefs (16/1)

Had Amakhosi not sacked Giovanni Solinas, I wouldn’t have mentioned them but they look promising under Ernst Middendorp. There’s talk of Knowledge Musona joining the team in January which could significantly magnify their chances of challenging for top positions. They might be currently lying in sixth place, but they’re only six points off the pace. As your wild card, you can take the Phefeni Glamour Boys at 16/1 to win the league.
