All eyes were on Doncaster on Friday, 9 September 2016 as SA-bred Same Jurisdiction took to the track in her UK debut in the 7 furlong Gr3 Japan Racing Association Sceptre Stakes at Doncaster.
The pre-race build-up was dominated by the Jeremy Noseda-trained Nemoralia, who was twice Gr1 placed in America last season, including at the Breeders’ Cup, and impressed on her latest appearance in the City of York Stakes. However, despite travelling well under Jamie Spencer, the favourite found little when the pressure was applied and was eased up to finish last of the seven horse field.
Maggie Pink (Michael Appleby / Alistair Rawlinson) broke well and took the field along for the first half of the seven-furlong journey, followed by Lumiere and La Rioja with Nemoralia and Roger Varian’s imposing Spangled travelling behind these.
With two furlongs to go, Maggie Pink faded out of contention, with Lumiere and Nemoralia taking charge. The challenge was short-lived with Nemoralia falling back and Lumiere pursued by Spangled and Mis En Rose.
Lumiere found nothing extra at the end and it was left to Mis En Rose and Spangled to fight it out, with Roger Varian’s Spangled gaining the verdict by a narrow margin.
Lumiere held on for third with Same Jurisdiction (Ed Dunlop / Ryan Moore) a very creditable fourth, giving SA race fans much hope for the future.
In his pre-race comments, trainer Ed Dunlop stated, “We hope she can show us plenty of promise to build on for the future.” The daughter of Mambo In Seattle certainly did that and the connections will have fun deciding where to take her from here.
