Anthony’s Gift Of A Second Chance

A champion talks

On 7 April 2018, Anthony Delpech’ life changed forever. That was the awful day he fell off Majestic Mambo during the SA Classic at Turffontein.

On Saturday 8 June 2024, Richard Fourie broke Anthony Delpech’ 25 year long SA record of 334 season winners.

The Hollywood Syndicate Racing Manager looks back.

Well Anthony, I for one am so glad you haven’t been lost to the industry. This has probably happened many times in your career but in the late 80’s early 90’s possibly Joe Joseph had a horse in the stable Presidential. You rode it probably then 1600 and he didn’t do well. The owner wasn’t happy and Joe said,”OK, I’ll put Jeff Lloyd up
When you got off you said the horse needs further and when Jeff got off he said, “the horse needs further”.
By now the owner was pulling what very little hair he had out in total frustration

Later Robbie Fradd rode him and said, the horse needs further. So Joe said OK, I’ll put him over 2000. Robbie said no, 3000.
To cut a long story short Presidential won 4 races over 3 and 3,2

My mate and I had a got laugh.

Mr.Ed because of age have to ask , was Joey Joseph still training in the 90s

      Will have a look, George

Great Interview enjoyed the discussion. Good luck with your new challenges that lie ahead.🐎👏

  4. Umesh Indurjeeth says:

Well done Antony for your long standing record and also to Richard for breaking that record.

Mr Ed… am not where to start with a different topic but will do so anyway.
The scratching of horses after the first race has started is not on. The TC02 levels should be done and dusted befiore race 1 hence giving the punters the opportunity to amend their bets especially the exotic bets. Today race 5 was a perfect example where Pritti Victory was scratched after the pick6 had started. Pritti Victory was the original favourite . Can we get some Clarity on this Mr Ed.

    1. Editor says:

      Hi Umesh
There has been extensive discussion on this topic. We can never escape the possibility of scratchings at any time up to the moment that they are under starter’s orders – even then there are variables at play sometimes.
The TCO2 testing is done in a window period, so horses cannot be tested on the morning of raceday.
      It’s not ideal, we agree.
But we are told it’s done for the maintenance of integrity of the game, levelling playing fields and ensuring fairness of competition.
      Regards

  5. Bennie Strydom says:

I do understand your point…but how fair is it to get your banker scratched?
Horse racing had an element of being calculated gamble…not anymore. You completely changed the risk profile of my pick 6 with me having no control or option to cancel.

  6. Geoff Logan says:

    Bennie. Spot on.
