Champion sire Jet Master has been much in the news this last weekend of January 2011.
A pair of yearling colts topped the inaugural Cape Premier Sale, at 2.5 million apiece. And 4yo Past Master won the 2.5 million J&B Met.
But the price of success differs.
The two yearling colts, born in 2009, were conceived in 2008. Jet Master’s fee: R200k.
Past Master, born in 2006, was conceived in 2005. Jet Master’s fee then: R20k.
The rise has been meteoric. Not just from Champion racehorse to Champion Sire and sire of Champions, but also in terms of stud fee.
Jet Master could be had for 20k in 2005, the year he made Champion freshman sire and Champion sire of 2yo’s. We didn’t know it then, but he nosed out Captain Al for those honours – and the Captain certainly has franked the form!
A year later, in 2006, Jet Master stood at R65k.
Then came the first sire championship and with it went the fee. To 200k in 2007, and the same in 2008. Rise ‘n shine.
Then the market weakened in general terms, and fees allround came down. Jet Master could be had for 170k in 2009, and 150k in 2010, the year of the world-market crash.
