Piet Steyn’s Festival Jamming!

Ridgemont Highlands Duke Of Marmalade colt wows

Milnerton veteran conditioner Piet Steyn and jockey Aldo Domeyer got the Cape Town Seafood & Jazz Racing Festival off to a flying start under sunny skies at Kenilworth on Saturday when the Duke Of Marmalade colt We’re Jamming won the R250 000 Cape Racing Gr3 Cape Of Good Hope Nursery.

Steyn owns and trains the winner who came good after three seconds at his first three starts.

It was a great start to the big day for breeders Ridgemont Highlands, who celebrated another win for their Potala Palace champion Katak at Kranji in Singapore a few hours earlier and a Gr3 success in Australia for their proven international sire, Canford Cliffs.

After Jayrani and the fancied Trompie had showed the way, Domeyer produced We’re Jamming (4-1) with a powerful run to beat 20-1 outsider Wecangoallnight by 2 lengths in a time of 72,43 secs.

Glen Kotzen’s Grinkov should not be in the maiden ranks for too long and he stayed on a neck back for third.

Out of the one-time winner Maidstone (Windrush), We’re Jamming is by the deceased Drakenstein Champion Duke Of Marmalade.

“A massive specimen of a horse. He is going to be something special as a 3yo. He won on raw ability. He is an exciting prospect,” said Domeyer.

“I rated him highly from the start. I put this horse on par with Katak. Wait – in six months time we will see,” added Piet Steyn.

We’re Jamming has won 1 race with 3 places from 4 starts for stakes of R226 650.

The fancied Trompie faded right out. Jockey Richard Fourie said his mount was a little bit agitated behind the gates.

“He felt easy and comfortable – at the 400m I thought it was cut and paste. At the 300m there was nothing there. But he is a young horse. We are still learning,” said Fourie.
