In a press release dated 4 September, Phumelela have clarified facts following media reports about Phindi Kema’s complaint lodged with the office of the Public Protector.
The Public Protector’s spokeswoman, Kgalelo Masibi, is quoted as saying that “the scope of the probe was to establish whether the provincial government had the authority to sell the horse racing properties and whether due process was followed in privatising the industry”
Phumelela acquired its race courses from racing clubs which, in turn, were owned by their members. Phumelela did not acquire a single race course from any provincial or government authority.”
