Veteran Cape workrider and assistant to the late Ronnie Sheehan, Peter Wrensch will saddle his first runner at Kenilworth on Saturday.
In an interview with the Sporting Post in May this year, the top former Cape Hunt amateur jockey declared that he had ridden what must be close to a record of over 40 000 horses in work at Milnerton in his forty years in the saddle.
The passing of his boss Ronnie Sheehan in October meant that Peter had to move quickly to slot into the trainer role. Sheehan had been ill for some time and the existing owners in the yard had long adjusted to Peter carrying a large part of the workload.
He wrote his Trainers Exam on 8 November and took over the Sheehan string.
Peter sends out his first runner at Kenilworth on Saturday when the honest stayer Troop The Colour runs in MR78 Handicap over 2400m.

He told the Sporting Post that he was looking forward to what would obviously be a very emotional moment for him.
“Troop The Colour is very fit and he should be competitive with 52.5kg to carry. He is well suited to the 2400m. Anthony Andrews knows him well. It’s a nice day of racing with some decent features carded. I am proud to be given this opportunity. I have many people to thank. I hope we can do well, ” he said.
