A Dashing Horse-Owner Called White…

A limerick honours a great racing man

Longstanding KZN based racing man Ian Gibson has written to the Sporting Post Mailbag, with a request that he be permitted an opportunity to pay a short tribute to Peter White, who passed away a week ago.

Mr Gibson writes that he first met Peter at Hennie Coetzee’s Stables in 1975.

We enjoyed a long and happy relationship based on our common love of the sport of horseracing and trout fishing.

We shared a nice colt called Danzig’s Mast who won 5 races for us.

I remember his helicopter and flew with him to the Vaal Racecourse once.

Many years ago, I wrote this limerick for my friend Peter after one of his horses had won:

A dashing horse-owner called White

Has never been known to get tight;

But when his nags win

He creates a huge din,

As though liquor has set him alight!

I will miss him.
