Malmoos – Another For Varsfontein!

Son of Captain Al looks an exciting prospect

He is a horse that Mike de Kock has labelled the ‘real deal’ and grouped in the same league as his star stablemate, Mount Pleasant. The multiple champion has also expressed the opinion that it will be a pity for South African racing if he misses the Cape season.

That was said prior to Malmoos, a son of Captain Al, bagged his first stakes victory and maintained his unblemished three-from-three record, when an emphatic victor at Turffontein on Saturday in the Palacebet.co.za Live Games Gr3 Graham Beck Stakes.

It was a second consecutive success in the 3yo feature for the De Kock team after NZ-bred Frosted Gold won the race last year.

And Malmoos, described as a ‘scopy, classic individual with a stallion’s pedigree’ by the Boss, looks very exciting.

Ridden by regular jockey Luke Ferraris on Saturday, he cruised in to beat his previously unbeaten stablemate Forever Mine (11-2) by 1,50 lengths in a time of 84,57 secs.

A full brother to the dual Group-winning stayer Captain Splendid, Malmoos rounded a terrific day for the Varsfontein team.

Bred on the same Captain Al/Fort Wood cross as Gr1 winners Captain America and William Longsword, Malmoos is by Captain Al (Al Mufti) out of the Spook Express Handicap winner Justthewayyouare, a half-sister to Varsfontein’s boom sire Master Of My Fate.

The second top lot at R4,4 million sold off the 2019 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, he races for Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum and has earned R167 100 for his three from three.

We hope he hits the high road to Cape Town!
