Reigning SA Champion jockey Warren Kennedy, who won the national title last season by a runaway 63 winners, will take his first three rides of the current season at Hollywoodbets Greyville today.

Kennedy has not seen racecourse action since partnering Swing Upon A Star and Shangani to victory in the Gr2 Epol Umkhomazi Stakes and the Gr3 Marshalls World Of Sport Gold Cup respectively on last season’s super Saturday finale at Hollywoodbets Greyville.

Both winners were for SA Champion trainer Paul Peter, who handed his licence in earlier this month. The partnership between Peter and Kennedy was a powerful one and it is something of a rare occurrence historically that both our champion trainer and champion jockey will be not be seen in action again the next term.

Kennedy, who recently returned from an overseas holiday, is expected to be jetting off to New Zealand with his family soon to commence a new life.

He is obviously trying to maintain fitness and is carded for three rides today, viz Wildstyle(5), Southern Cape(6) and Wiccan Warrior(7).

The best of his trio appears to be in the sixth, an MR 86 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1900m on the turf track, where he rides Southern Cape for trainer Paul Lafferty.

  • The first is off at 12h35.
