On his own! All The Bids (Fanie Chambers) romps home to a facile win (JC Photos)
Find us a horse who can run every other week and win races on three different surfaces from 1000m to 2200m – and we will take at least five of him. Trainer Corne Spies and the Favour Stud had plenty to celebrate at Flamingo Park on Monday when 3yo All The Bids defied the odds of the widest draw and topweight to score a facile win in the R100 000 Northern Cape Stayers Handicap.
Despite the negatives, All The Bids went off a popular 12-10 shot in the field of thirteen, that included the Vodacom Durban July near- hero, Smanjemanje.
Regular pilot Fanie Chambers had no hesitation in jumping All The Bids quickly and crossing from his wide draw as he took the lead into the country at his first try at 2200m. Into the back straight, New Circle, and then Merciless passed the early leader briefly, before Chambers confidently regained the lead.
He was never seen again and All The Bids came home to win by an effortless 5,50 lengths in a time of 148,04 secs, with Chambers exercising only his neck and arm muscles.
Smanjemanje plodded into second, with African Gladiator rocking the quartet by staying on into third at any old price.
Corne Spies – wins all over the country!
There is little more to report on the race other than to heap oodles of praise and commendation on the tireless conquering efforts of the Spies team, who win their races across the country and beyond our borders into Zimbabwe.
They go everywhere – except maybe the Cape. But at R100 000 a pop in Kimberley, who needs to travel all the way to Durbanville for a R67 000 handicap?
All The Bids has won 8 races with 7 places in a fairly busy career of 26 starts to date.
He took his earnings to R485 550 with this little non black-type feature under the belt.
All The Bids was bred by Favour Stud from the Unbridled stallion Daring Bid and is out of the ten-time winner All The Nines – a daughter of Mistral Dancer.
Interestingly, like her talented son, All The Nines also won on three different tracks – Durbanville, Bloemfontein and Kimberley.
Which just goes to show that racehorses don’t have to boast a natty and pricy fashion label to provide serious pleasure and pay their way – and more!
Trainer Spies wasn’t happy about the handicapper before the race – with All The Bids going in here on a 106, it will be interesting to see where they pitch his rating.
He could even be a 2015 Emerald Cup prospect the way he is going. And Spies knows how to win those too.
The meeting was abandoned after this race. That’s another story entirely.

AFTER THE RUNNING OF RACE 1, JOCKEYS HAD RAISED CONCERNS REGARDING THE CONDITION OF THE TRACK BETWEEN THE 800M AND THE 600M OF THE 1000M CHUTE, PARTICULARLY ON THE INSIDE RUNNING RAIL. IT WAS THEN ESTABLISHED THAT THERE WAS A LEAK IN THE IRRIGATION SYSTEM, WHICH CAUSED THE INSIDE OF THE TRACK TO BECOME WATERLOGGED. AS THE FOLLOWING FIVE RACES WOULD BE RUN AROUND THE TURN AND NOT THROUGH THIS AFFECTED AREA, THIS WOULD GIVE THE TRACK MANAGER TIME TO WORK ON THE TRACK AND ATTEMPT TO RECTIFY THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER, AFTER THE RUNNING OF RACE 7, A TRACK INSPECTION WAS CARRIED OUT BY A PANEL COMPRISING JOCKEYS, A TRAINER, PHUMELELA DUTY MANAGER, PHUMELELA TRACK MANAGER, STIPENDIARY STEWARD AND VETERINARY SURGEON AND IT WAS THE UNANIMOUS DECISION THAT THE TRACK WAS UNSAFE FOR RACING AND RACES 8 AND 9 WERE ABANDONED.
