Prohibited Substance – Erasmus Fined

Has right of appeal against finding and penalty

The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an Inquiry held at its offices in Johannesburg on Wednesday, 11 March 2020, Trainer Mr C E Erasmus was charged with a contravention of Rule 73.2.4.

The particulars being, that he was the Trainer and the person responsible for the horse EMILY JAY, which ran in and won the 3rd race run at Turffontein Racecourse on 14 December 2019.  A urine specimen, taken from EMILY JAY disclosed upon analysis the presence of Flunixin which is a prohibited substance in terms of the Rules.

Mr Erasmus pleaded not guilty to the charge, but was found guilty of the charge.

The Inquiry Board, after careful deliberation and taking into account Mr Erasmus’ mitigating factors that he put forward, as well as his record, imposed a penalty of a fine of R23 000.

Mr Erasmus has the Right of Appeal against both the finding and penalty imposed.

Furthermore, in terms of Rule 72.3.2, EMILY JAY is disqualified from the said race and the provisions of Rule 67.7.8 shall apply.
