Guru Opens The Big Day

Gavin van Zyl's Trippi gelding too strong

Newly crowned Winning Form sponsored SA champion jockey Warren Kennedy got the SA Champions Season finale at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday off to a flyer when the Klawervlei bred all-weather specialist Guru’s Pride stormed home to win the R85 000 New Turf Carriers Listed Darley Arabian.

Easy to back as a weak 5-1 favourite, Gavin van Zyl’s Trippi gelding registered his maiden stakes success when produced late to collar Woodhill Racing’s free striding Duc D’Orange, who looked a likely winner inside the distance.

Guru’s Pride won by 0,80 in a new course record time of 92,67 secs.

Duc D’Orange stayed on gallantly for second, with the supported More Magic (7-1) holding form and running into third, 1,30 lengths back.

The fancied Nexus (5-1) ran stone last after reportedly not striding out.

Named after his owner, Roy ‘Guru’ Baldeo, the winner, a R250 000 Cape Yearling Sale buy-back, has now won 4 of 8 starts for 2 places and stakes of R260 500.

A 4yo gelded son of Drakenstein champion Trippi (End Sweep), the winner is out of the three-time winning General Nediym mare, Generous Anna.
