Cape Premier Yearling Sale Book II

The sale-landscape in the Cape has been dramatically reshaped in the last twelve months. The TBA’s traditional first-quarter regional Cape Sale is no more. Equimark’s Vintage Sale, held around Easter time, closed its doors in 2011 as well. The Cape Premier Sale made a spectacular entry in January 2011, and followed up strongly last month, with was is now known as Book One. The overflow of yearling entires that didn’t make Book One find themselves, for the first time in 2012, in the Cape Sale Book Two.
An analysis of the vendors at the sale makes it clear that Book Two is as much a replacement of the Equimark Vintage Sale as anything else. That’s a good thing: the Vintage Sale’s reputation was built on having delivered Gr1 winners from every crop since its inception in 1998.
Trademark, Crimson Palace, Glamour Boy, Set Afire, Jay Peg, Sun Classique, Mythical Flight, and Variety Club conjure up vivid memories of Lionel Cohen’s brainchild.
The ‘old’ Cape Regional sale has been no slouch either. Pocket Power,  Mother Russia, Nania, Ancestral Fore, English Garden, Ivory Trail, Sparkling Gem, O Caesour – all big ‘uns who side-stepped the flagship National Sale.
All this goes to show that the inaugural Book Two sale should not be taken lightly. There will be gems, undoubtedly. Who will unearth them?
Karel Miedema, as usual, has shovelled his way through the catalogue, sire by sire, and may have unearthed a few notable pedigrees. Time for everyone to do more homework before setting out for the new sale venue at Kenilworth.
