Vision and Value

2013 National 2yo Sale

–   Thursday 15 August at  13h00
–   Friday 16 August at 13h00
–   at the TBA Sales Complex, Gemiston

There’s something about the two-year-old sale that intrigues. Like any other major sale it throws up its fair share of big winners. But when it comes to overseas competitors things appear to be quite out of the ordinary. Irridescence, JJ The Jet Plane, Dane Julia, River Jetez, Cerise Cherry, The Apache.

Jackson, a 2yo Sale graduate, drew clear to win the Gr1 Champions Cup

Back To Best! Jacskon drew clear to win the Gr1 Champions Cup

The major sales held earlier in the year all have barriers to entry. You have to have pedigree, and you have to look the part in terms of conformation. It’s all about scoring points. The 2yo sale has no such hurdles. Anything goes. There are the late developers who grow into great lookers such as Jackson – he made a cool million at the sale in 2010. There are the unproven sires. Then there are the faulty ones, such as J J The Jet Plane with his funny legs. Or fillies with what the market regards as ‘lesser’ pedigrees, like River Jetez, whose famous full brother Pocket Power was still under wraps when she went through the ring. And Dane Julia, whose dam was not more than a fair sprinter – be it that she was a daughter of Danehill. And then more recently, the Gr1 winner The Apache left our shores and earned a cool R12-million in his three Gr1 and Gr2 performances in Dubai.

At the end of the recent season, Jackson a R1million graduate came back to seal his racing career with another Gr1 win.

Last year’s sales topper was a Tapit filly consigned by Highlands and for which Joey Ramsden went to R650 000.
The 2012 average price of just over R69 000 shows that one doesn’t have to spend an arm and a leg either, to acquire that dream machine.

Flax

Flax, a 2yo sale graduate wins Gr1 Raffles Cup in Singapore

This year we have 364 2yo’s catalogued over the two days with everything from recently crowned champion sire sensation, Silvano, to a host of exciting first season sires.

The value to be had for the fortunate and astute  buyer, is evidenced by the consistent local and international achievements of graduates from this veritable goldmine over the years. What of the 2013 2yo sale catalogue? It seems very much business as usual, with the leading sires only marginally represented, and Graded black type in relatively short supply. But as we well know, gems are lurking in the pages.

JUDPOT Like None Before

The outstanding young Varsfontein sire Judpot is firing on all fronts and has laid claim to the distinction of producing the best ever first season results by a sire in this country. And what an opening innings it has been!

Along Came Polly - Gr1 Thekwini Stakes

Along Came Polly – Gr1 Thekwini Stakes

Besides his recent host of good winners, he went very close to recording a remarkable first crop Gr1 double at Greyville on Super Saturday.
Not only is Judpot the sire of impressive Zimbabwean winner Stirling Road, but his daughter Along Came Polly won the Gr1 Thekwini Stakes (possibly wrapping up an Equus Award in the process), and another first crop son, Forest Indigo, ran a cracking second in the same day’s Gr1 Premier’s Champion Stakes.

Judpot has now had three first crop stakes winners – two of whom (Along Came Polly, Forest Indigo) having won at the highest level.
Stirling Road, an easy 2.5 lengths winner at Borrowdale on debut, was a R25 000 purchase at the 2012 Emperors Palace National 2yo Sale. Owner John Koumides looks to have a very promising future prospect and the , Hemel ‘N Aarde Stud  bred is yet another feather in the cap of his remarkable young sire.

NATIONAL EMBLEM Nation’s Pride

Shea Shea

Shea Shea – Proudly SA!

South African champion racehorse National Emblem’s BSA graduate son Shea Shea hit the top of the international charts late last week when he was assigned the joint top rating for a South African bred horse in the world.

National Emblem, died earlier this year, but the good soldier does have two rather intriguing lots on offer:

Shea Shea was been given a rating of 120 (which makes him equal to What A Winter and one pound ahead of Horse of the Year Variety Club), by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities.
Shea Shea received his rating following his wins in Dubai and his fine placings in two of Britain’s greatest sprint races . These ratings cover the period 1st December 2012 to 14th July 2013.

The world’s top rated horse during that period is the now retired Black Caviar, unbeaten in 25 starts. The daughter of Bel Esprit received a rating of 120, ahead of such luminaries as US Horse of the Year Wise Dan, and fellow US stars Fort Larned and Game on Dude.
Shea Shea, who is owned by Brian Joffe and Myron Berzack, was a R550 000 at the 2009 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale from the Klawervlei draft.

Following a stellar career in South Africa, where he won four features and over R1,5 million  in prize money, Shea Shea was exported to Dubai – where he took the world by storm.

After landing the Listed Meydan Sprint, Shea Shea made South African hearts rejoice with a seamless win in the Gr1 Al Quoz Sprint on World Cup night.
He has since been placed in two of Britain’s most prestigious sprints – the Gr1 King’s Stand Stakes and Gr1 July Cup – and there is plenty of unfinished business on that front!

An unnamed Penrose filly (348) is a half-sister to 3 winners. Her dam is a winning Rakeen half-sister to a stakes placed filly, and this is the family of Oaks winner Haute Cuisine.

He was subsequently retired to Coolmore Stud  – the former home of his legendary sire.

The Irish bred Yeats filly, catalogued as lot 281, is out of a mare by champion sire Danehill Dancer, and, is thus bred on the world famous Sadler’s Wells/Danehill nick made immortal by Frankel.
