2012 National Yearling Sale Preview

Everyone knows that Gr1 winners come from Gr1 sales. No sales venue has more of those rare performers than the Gr1 National Yearling Sales. That’s a fact. The 2012 renewal of National is bound to keep the proud tradition.

Predictably, this year’s gathering boasts a host of siblings to big winners.
Full brothers to international stars Zanzamar, Captain’s Lover, Lizard’s Desire. Half sisters to evergreens Hunting Tower and Tiza, who are still making mark abroad. A full brother to that rare thing, a multiple Gr1 winner, such as Aslan. A half sister to new young sire Rebel King, himself represented by yearlings at this sale. There are more.
Then there’s the old adage, that the best performed mares make notable producers. Such as Gr1 J&B Met winner Imperious Sue, dam of Gr1 winner Imperious Star. She has a yearling filly. Or Gr1 Majorca Stakes winner Sarabande, dam of Gr2 winner (so far!) Chesalon. Hers is a yearling colt.
Of course, spotting all these takes no particular skill other than being able to turn pages in the catalogue. Everyone knows.

The real skill comes with picking up the thread at the beginning. To decide which the new Gr1 runners will be. There always has to be a first somewhere.
The real skill comes with being able to marry suitable conformation to suitable pedigrees. Sometimes excellent conformation ovewrcomes a lesser pedigree. Sometimes pedigree overcomes lesser conformation. That’s where value lies, and experience counts. Knowing when to say no, and when to say yes.
When it comes to pedigrees, it pays to study the annual musings in Sporting Post’s sale supplements in print and on the website. To look beyond the obvious. It starts here everything you need to know about the National Yearling Sales.
