Cape based stallion Time Thief’s gutsy daughter In Her Time has held on to notch her second GrI win in Saturday’s Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington.
In Her Time won The Galaxy at Rosehill last autumn before lasting to notch her maiden Melbourne win when she held off the fast-finishing Osborne Bulls in the $750,000 Lightning Stakes.
In Her Time faced the breeze near the speed but refused to give in when challenged at the 50m, clinging to a short-head margin on the line over Osborne Bulls. The Tony McEvoy-trained Sunlight was third.
Zac Purton was aboard for In Her Time’s win in The Galaxy but Corey Brown was thrilled to score at the highest level on a sprinter with which he has developed a strong partnership.
“I’ve had a little bit of luck on her. I’ve had some bad luck on her as well so to get the Group I, it’s a job well done,” Brown said.
“She jumped good, which she normally doesn’t and travelled up well, it’s her first time over the 1000(m) under race conditions.
“She didn’t win by a big margin but it was a tough win.”
In Her Time’s trainer Kris Lees said Brown’s decision to let In Her Time roll forward after beginning well was the winning move in the Lightning Stakes.
“She got a wonderful ride from Corey today and it was good to see her hold off the fast-finishing second horse,” Lees said.
“She was exposed the whole race but Corey summed it up early when she took up the running on the inside and it was probably a winning move.”
Lees was also pleased with the effort of the fourth-placed Graff. The Newcastle trainer said both horses were likely to have their next start in the Group I Newmarket Handicap but the handicapper would have the final say on his plan with In Her Time.
“Both horses will go to the Newmarket, depending what weight she gets. She’s now a dual Group I winner so we’ll see what the handicapper gives her,” Lees said.
A son of Redoute’s Choice, the multiple G1 placed sprinter/miler Time Thief stood at Nadeson Park last term for a fee of R25 000. He is a 3/4 brother to SA Champion Sprinter Laisserfaire.
