Freelance lightweight jockey Muzi Yeni joined the elite ranks of SA riders who have ridden the jackpot when he sewed up the popular exotic bet in just over two hours at Kimberley on Monday.
The 27 year old Yeni rode three of the four winners for trainer Tienie Prinsloo and his opening winner was the easiest of the lot.
The well backed former Vernon Rugg trained Sir Isaac won the 1800m MR 66 Handicap by 7,25 lengths with Yen looking behind and saluting. His conduct drew mixed comment from Sporting Post Facebook friends with Ashleigh Hughes suggesting: “Billy Harvey got hammered with huge suspension for grandstanding when he won the July on Gondolier. It’s unsafe for the horses anyway. One foot even slightly wrong (and Kimberley isn’t the greatest surface, let’s be honest), and the horse’s ligaments or tendons could be damaged. Irresponsible riding. Completely unnecessary. Rather jump off the saddle with a flourish for a bit of celebration. Don’t do it while the horse is in motion. And I have no sympathy if a grandstanding jockey falls off.”
On the other hand, Robert Zackey was more understanding : “How do people see racing? Muzi Yeni rode that to perfection. How far do you want the horse to win by? He obviously has the horse and connections at heart , merit rating…”
Yeni won the second leg on the 6yo Derbaas, with Jagerbomb and the vastly improved Victoria Park winning the last two legs.
The Jackpot paid R251.90.
