With the carryover Bipot pool exceeding projections and reaching R809 000, the Vodacom Durban July day feature programme got off to a bit of a bumpy start for punters when Muzi Yeni produced the Gauteng raider Winter Stories to win the R1 million KZN Yearling Sale Million in fine style.
The R180 000 KZN Yearling Sale graduate was tuned to the minute by Weiho Marwing and produced a bumper return on investment for his owners the Chamarel Racing Syndicate, when slicing through at 8-1 late in the 1300m contest to beat Tony Rivalland’s debut winner Dandolo (16-1) and Walls Of Dubrovnik (11-1), in a time of 78, 11 secs.
Kavian’s Cara (50-1) completed the R24 000 plus quartet.
The result put paid to almost 700 000 Bipot combinations, with the Gr1 winning favourite Vernichey overcoming her wide draw and leading for a long time. But she folded at the 250m and ran unplaced.
Winter Stories was bred by Nadeson Park Stud and is by What A Winter (Western Winter) out of the six-time winning Silvano mare, Katara.
The gelding has won twice from 6 starts for 3 places and took his earnings to R719 000.
