Vaughan Marshalll has big plans for Mljet

Milnerton based trainer Vaughan Marshall is planning an ambitious campaign for his exciting classic prospect Mljet who is now back in Cape Town.

Mljet is owned by Michael Leaf, who also races Vodacom Durban July runner-up Wylie Hall.

Vaughan Marshall told Michael Clower earlier this week:

“He is going to run in the Selangor Cup at Kenilworth on 22 November although the Cape Classic (25 October) is an option. I would like to give him two races because straight after the Grand Parade Cape Guineas (20 December) he goes to Jo’burg to be prepared for the Triple Crown.”

Michael Leaf’s Jet Master colt won his first two starts at Clairwood before having no luck when dead-heating for third behind Harry’s Son in the Premiers Champion Stakes at Greyville.

He lost a length at the start, had to be steadied 300m out and then had to be switched to get a clear run. Even so, he was beaten barely a neck.

He is a half brother to the recent National 2yo Sale record-breaking, Bombardino, a Varsfontein Stud bred Western Winter colt.

Dean Kanemeyer thrilled with purchase of Mljet’s half brother

After some spirited bidding (Mike Azzie was the underbidder), he was purchased for R2,6 million by Form Bloodstock, on behalf of a leading European owner and will be trained by Dean Kannemeyer.

An excited Kannemeyer said recently of a horse he labelled ‘the colt of the sale’.

“I believe we got what we came for. People may suggest that it is a value sale, and that is true. But the old maxim applies – there is always money for a nice horse and if you breed a bad horse, you are going to leave with a bloody nose. That is the tough commercial reality of it,” he said.

“We had to dig deep to get him, but he looks worth every cent of it. He is a great mover with a classic look about him, a lovely head – in fact he ticks all the boxes. He is by the ill-fated multiple champion sire Western Winter out of the Spectrum mare, Subyan Dreams, who has produced six foals and six winners. He is thus a half-brother to the Michael Leaf-owned Mljet, a promising colt who had tongues wagging in Champions Season.”
