Mike de Kock’s superstar 4yo Hawwaam was put through his paces by big race rider Anton Marcus under glorious Cape summer skies at Kenilworth on Saturday and pleased the champion trainer and his assistant, Mathew.
Priced up by South Africa’s leading bookmakers Hollywoodbets at 9-10 for the prestigious weight-for-age mile on Saturday 11 January, and at evens for the Sun Met three weeks later, Hawwaam is based at Milnerton and won his only Cape start in the Gr2 Premier Trophy late last year.

“He strode out well today and he is in a good place. Anton worked him over the 1000m straight. We are all set for Saturday and then he will go straight into the Sun Met,” Mike de Kock told the Sporting Post.
He also said that his Summer Cup fourth-placer and Yellowwood Handicap winner Queen Supreme, an entry in Saturday’s R1 million Gr1 Paddock Stakes, had arrived safely at Milnerton on Saturday morning.
“We will be aiming to give her a look at the left-handed turn at Kenilworth next week. She arrived in good shape and she will be ready,” he added.
Declarations for both the R1,5 million Gr1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and the Gr1 Paddock Stakes are due by 11h00 on Monday 6 January.
