Candice Robinson, who takes over as head trainer of Bass Racing on 1 August 2016, will make an immediate impact by simultaneously opening a permanent residency in Summerveld, Kwa-Zulu Natal.
Robinson has a signed a contract for 30 stables in a private Summerveld training complex.
“It’s now become a necessity “said Robinson, who is of the shared opinion that with fewer Cape meetings and suitable races scheduled throughout the year, Cape racing is under enormous pressure to please their owners.
“Having two centres to work from with alternating peak seasons, also makes sense for us in a lot of ways.”
Long-term assistant to Mike Bass, Robert Fayd’Herbe, a Durbanite himself, is familiar with their training strategy and the local training tracks having worked with Bass in KZN for more than 10 years during the high season.
By acquiring a private facility, they also do not fall under any jurisdictions with regards to racing horses with minimum merit ratings that apply under the current Gold Circle legislation for visitors.
“It’s an alternative yard for us to race horses that may not be able to cope with the stronger competition that the Cape summer season offers” said Robinson “And a major enticing factor is that it serves as a sensible geographical base from which to raid Johannesburg from, when need be.”
Inara’s recent Grade 1 victory in the Empress Club stakes is a prime example.
Cape trainer Dean Kannemeyer is another to successfully assert his presence in both centers very successfully, so they look forward to the challenge.
With father Mike Bass firmly at her side, and with the necessary ingredients in place for expansion, Robinson has made her intentions very clear from the start!
Its onward and upward for Bass Racing.
