The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an inquiry held at its offices in Johannesburg on 13 March 2020, Trainer Michael Mahiakola was charged with a contravention of Rule 10.5.1.
The particulars being, that as a licensed Trainer, he failed to provide a reasonable level of care, treatment and training to the horses under his control, which resulted in horses showing on examination, poor condition and consequently the NHA having to intervene and provide independent veterinary care.
Mr Mahiakola pleaded guilty to the charge and was found guilty of the charge.
The Inquiry Board, when determining a penalty, took into account the evidence presented, factors put forward in mitigation, as well as Mr Mahiakola’s clean record and imposed a penalty of a fine of ten thousand rand (R10 000).
Furthermore, Mr Mahiakola’s Trainer’s licence was cancelled. This cancellation is wholly suspended for a period of three (3) years, provided that during the period of suspension he is not found guilty of a contravention of a similar charge.
Mr Mahiakola has the Right of Appeal against the penalty imposed.
