Mike de Kock’s new acquisition Fire Away (USA), ultimately destined for stallion duties in South Africa, makes his racetrack debut at Meydan this evening.
Fire Away is a son of War Front (USA) and Salute, by Unbridled, and Mike said: “This is an exciting new project for a group of breeders who bought shares in the horse. I can report that he is a very good-looking horse with excellent form on turf in the US. He’s a lovely horse to work with, he has pleased us in his time here and we look forward to seeing him run.”
Fire Away has been entered for the Azizi Mina Handicap over 1600m on turf, Race 7 on the Meydan programme, and Mike said: “He’s travelled and he’s an older horse, so it’s hard to predict what kind of run he will deliver. But his work with us has been very good, he’s shown his ability and if he reproduces what he has shown, he should run a good race first up.
“Whatever happens, this race will bring him on, he will improve for it.”
Former Zimbabwe and KZN trainer Bart Rice has his first ever runner at the Dubai Carnival when he sends out Buhwarui Banseok (USA) over 2000m in the Race 5 at Meydan on Thursday night.
Tabnews reports that Rice relocated to South Korea in 2013, and has enjoyed plenty of success there.
To complete the SA connection, his runner in the Azizi Star Handicap (run at 1850 SA time) will be partnered by top SA heavyweight Bernard Fayd’Herbe, who has his opening ride at the carnival.
The primary reason for Fayd’herbe’s Dubai jaunt is to partner 2017 Vodacom July winner Marinaresco, and the gelding is due to kick off his campaign a week later on January 24.
BUHWARUI BANSEOK (USA) (Tizway – Aim For The Moon) is an experienced Class 1 campaigner in Korea. He has won eight of his twenty-eight career outings to date with his most recent success coming in a very good win over 1800m in October, the minimum trip that he usually races at.
He was priced up as one of the outsiders in the eleven strong party when betting came out.
