Ingrid & Markus Jooste – Mayfair Speculators a dominant force in SA racing
The Tattersalls Yearling Sale Book 1 continued on day 2 (Wednesday) and saw South Africa’s top owners Mayfair Speculators making the news with an inspired 1.3m guineas buy. Markus Jooste was at the sale with his son Micael, Racing Manager Derek Brugman and Klawervlei’s John Koster.
The stony faces belied the moment as the hammer fell on lot 244 – a magnificent Frankel colt out of the dual Group 1 winner Peeress, sold by breeder Cheveley Park Stud, for 1.3 million and bought by MV Magnier, alongside Markus Jooste’s Mayfair Speculators.
“He is a lovely horse and out of a good racemare,” said MV Magnier. “Cheveley Park is a great producer and its record speaks for itself. We have got to know the Joostes very well now and they are straight-forward and very decent people, it is a pleasure to work with them.”
The colt’s sale was a record price for Cheveley Park, whose previous best was 620,000gns (given for the Frankel out of Heaven Sent, bought by Juddmonte), although the farm were sale toppers with Entrepreneur and Happy Valentine in 1995.
Frankel – champion and a great start as a sire
Cheveley Park bought into this family over 30 years ago with the purchase of the colt’s fourth dm, Tender Loving Care.
“Our policy is to sell all the colts and retain fillies, and though I would have loved to have kept him, we have to stay true to our policy,” smiled stud manager Chris Richardson. “He is bred on the same Frankel/Pivotal cross as Dewhurst hopeful Seven Heavens, also bred by Cheveley Park.
“It is a compliment to the stud that this horse was bought by MV Magnier, and shows that our breeding policy is working and is truly international. He is a beautiful horse, very powerful and much like his sire, and he is out of a great racemare. She is by Pivotal who is becoming a phenomenal broodmare sire.”
The colt returned from the sale ring to cheers from the Cheveley Park team and an army of camera phones as they all took shots and video of their star before he heads to Ireland.
