Matchett’s Rafeef Flyer Opens Classic Day

An untidy start but a brilliant victory!

After an untidy start, where the eventual winner jumped sideways hampering Princess Keira, Rachel Venniker kept Glastonbury (28-10) balanced all the way and then stayed on well to beat eye-catching first-timer Green Diamond (6-1) by 2,10 lengths in a time of 57,66 secs for the 1000m on sticky ground.

The 7-10 tote favourite and recent debut winner Elegantrix (7-10) was beaten a further 0,30 lengths back in third.

The winner is raced by the Kapnias family and is trained by Paul Matchett.

A R250 000 Cape Premier Yearling Sale graduate, Glastonbury was bred by Pippa Mickleburgh and is a daughter of boom Redoute’s Choice sire Rafeef out of the one-time winning Gimmethegreenlight mare, Gimme London.

Now a winner of 2 races with a place from her 3 starts, Glastonbury took her stakes bank to R281 250.

Entries for the R1,5 million CRS Cape Slipper close at 11h00 on Friday 7 March.

Declarations for the CRS Cape Slipper are due by 11h00 on Monday 10 March.
