How will the exciting Charles Dickens respond to a challenge in the final stages of his first run over a mile in the R2 million Hollywoodbets Gr1 Cape Guineas on Saturday?
Finding a chink in the undefeated son of Trippi’s armour is difficult – he has just done everything right in reeling off five wins in his first five starts.
But Randjesfontein trainer Grant Maroun, who saddles Gr3 Allied Steelrode Graham Beck Stakes winner, Anfields Rocket (25-1 on the Hollywoodbets boards), believes that racing always has a chance of dishing up fairytales.
Speaking to the Sporting Post from Milnerton on Thursday, where the now Hollywood Syndicate-owned Anfields Rocket has settled after the long road trip from the North, Grant said that Saturday will show whether the impressive Charles Dickens is as good as his record shows so far.
“Charles Dickens has really been impressive and maybe we really all are racing for second! But we haven’t seen how he responds to a challenge and he may just get that on Saturday, where he faces 14 smart opponents.”
Grant is under no illusions, but says that Anfields Rocket has settled in well at Milnerton after taking his road trip very well.
“Sean Veale took him around Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Sunday as he hasn’t raced left-handed. He showed him the junction and the turn – nothing pressured, but Sean was impressed. It’s just the draw that is a worry, and we won’t have many options but to drop him out. He is versatile and Gavin Lerena is a big race rider. So now we just need some luck.”

On a line through Mike de Kock’s Shoemaker, there is not much between the trio of Gauteng raiders, which include the Maroun rocket and Graham Beck Stakes and Dingaans runner-up, Shoemaker.
