Lyle, You Beauty!

141st ride breaks the ice for young SA champion

It’s taken 140 rides longer than he would have chosen it to, but our enormously talented young SA Champion Jockey Lyle Hewitson finally broke his Hong Kong hoodoo in style in the final race of 2019 at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Riding Last Kingdom for his countryman Dougie Whyte, Lyle showed his balance and skill when getting the Frankel longshot up in a three-cornered finish, that will probably go down as the most satisfying winner of his short career.

This was his 141st ride since taking up his contract in September.

As reported, the Pak Tam Chung was a minor event on the day, but the race was worth HK$1.45 million – the equivalent of a cool R2,6 million.
