Cold As Ice wins Laisserfaire_compressed

Joey Ramsden’s supercharged 3yo Western Winter filly Cold As Ice led her rivals a merry dance as she strode away for an effortless victory in the R150 000 Listed Laisserfaire Stakes run over 1000m at Kenilworth on Saturday.

After the start debacle of the Avontuur Cape Fillies Guineas early in December, where Cold As Ice was withdrawn after dumping her rider and cantering the course following the loading procedures, she was installed a red hot order to win her fourth race on the trot.

And it could not have been easier as Sean Cormack let her stride into the sniping South Easter as her fellow Avontuur-bred Balkan paced it out with Varikate right in the mix and The Which Doctor further back.

At the 300m marker Sean Cormack pressed the button and Cold As Ice drew away with only Rosier chasing her home. Varikate stayed on well for third, with Als Bonanza well beaten in fourth.

Sean Cormack – armchair ride today and a feature double

Cormack was a passenger (he went home with a nice feature double under the belt) as he gave Cold As Ice one smack to straighten her up as she drew clear impressively at very restricted odds of 9 to 20 to win by 1,75 lengths.

Cold As Ice has now won 4 races with 1 place from 5 starts for stakes of R439 875.

She was purchased on the Cape Premier Yearling Sale Book 1 for R875 000 and races in a  partnership for Brian and Kathy Finch and Wayne and Belinda Kieswetter.

Breeder Pippa Mickleburgh was on course to enjoy Cold As Ice’s win.

The smashing filly was bred by Avontuur Farm and is by Western Winter out of the lightning fast seven time winning National Assembly mare, Viva.

The race was named in honour of the outstanding dual Equus Award multiple Gr1 winning Australian bred sprinter Laisserfaire, who raced in the interests of Sabine Plattner some 14 years ago.

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
