Jockey Fanie Chambers won’t forget the 2014 Emerald Cup day in a great hurry. Besides his superb win on Tommy Gun in the big one, he was also instrumental in providing the firework’s on the Roy Magner-trained Tomorrow’s Miss who won the R150 000 Listed Emerald Fillies Stakes in great style.

The 38 year old Chambers is not one of the high-profile glamour boys and the Ellisras Primary School old boy came into race riding through the back door as it were. After studying engineering, he applied to become a special apprentice at the relatively late age of 23.

He has never looked back and the Pretorian enjoyed a thriller of an afternoon at the office on Saturday.

While the untested on sand Captain’s Daughter was backed to favourite, the race came down to a duel over the final 300m between two of the lesser fancied runners.

Chambers had ridden a confident race on the 5yo Cataloochee mare Tomorrow’s Miss and when he sidled up to JP Van Der Merwe and Mystic Express at the 300m, the race was on.

After slugging it out, the more mature combination got their way and Tomorrow’s Miss prevailed by a neck in a time of 90,43 secs.

The 3yo Mystic Express looks a good sort and her day will still come. The favourite Captain’s Daughter was well beaten in third.

The Summerhill Stud-bred Tomorrow’s Miss is a daughter of Cataloochee out of the twice winning Red Ryder mare, How About Now.

Tomorrow’s Miss has won 6 of her 27 starts for 9 places and R496 575 in stakes.

The Enchanting Currency Of Fate

It is eerie to think that there would have been no Siren’s Call, Sound Of Warning, or for that matter Call To Unite, had fate not decreed that Enchanted Cove follow her dam to South Africa, and that Peter de Beyer had the foresight to return Elusive Fort back home from the States as well!
