Muzi Yeni produces the charm as Great Rumpus scores in Easter Handicap
An improving local grabbed the honours in Sunday’s R150 000 Listed Easter Handicap run at Clairwood. Trainer Frank Robinson rounded off a nice double on the afternoon as Muzi Yeni rode a determined finish to get the Black Minnaloushe gelding Great Rumpus home for his first stakes win, in the supporting feature.
The withdrawal of Astro News threw the race wide open and inside the final 400m of the race, there were chances to any one of ten runners.
Anton Marcus had taken the initiative on the 4 to 1 Dylan’s Promise, who led from early on. The only filly in the field was to come under early pressure in the home straight though as the field fanned out with 7 to 2 favourite Gold Onyx catching the eye as he moved up well.
But with Keagan De Melo hard at work and King Neptune responding well with Joshuas Crown right in the mix, it was wide open.
Muzi Yeni had been watching from just off the action and he produced Great Rumpus witha smart effort inside the 300m marker.
The Black Minnaloushe gelding showed courage and held on well to beat King Neptune by 1,75 lengths in a time of 120,49 secs.

It was good effort by the runner up, who was returning from a 17 week break.
Joshuas Crown was also all over them in the straight and he maintained his consistency with a solid run.
The fancied Dylan’s Promise led for a long way but faded right out to nothing.
Favourite Gold Onyx also moved up menacingly in the run for home and appeared to be going best of all, but found nothing late and ran downfield.
Great Rumpus was bred by Varsfontein Stud and is by Black Minnaloushe out of the six time winning Royal Chalice mare, Princess Polly. That makes him a half brother to the well performed Master Plan (Jet Master).
Great Rumpus was bought for R250 000 on the National Yearling and has surpassed that investment at his 17th run.
He has earned R261 125 with 3 wins and 7 places to his credit.
