Former South African Triple Crown winner Louis The King produced his first stakes winner, when his three-year-old son Pamushana’s Pride staked his SA Derby claims when he won the R100 000 Listed Derby Trial at Turffontein on Saturday.
Trained by Alec Laird, Pamushana’s Pride was only the second foal born by the SA Triple Crown star, who is set for greater things in the breeder barn – his small numbers to date showing that he produces horses with speed and stamina.
His only runner per crop to race as juveniles have both won.
But on Saturday it was Pamushana’s Pride who grabbed the limelight. He had won his last two starts prior to the feature, and the gelding continued his progress when scoring a courageous win in the Derby Trial.

Under S’Manga Khumalo, Pamushana’s Pride defied 60kgs to post a courageous head win at the expense of Baymax.
Bred and owned by Louis The King (LTK) Racing & Breeding, Pamushana’s Pride won in a time of 125.68 seconds.
The gelding has now won four of just seven starts with two places and has earned R200 000.
A winner of his last three races, Pamushana’s Pride hails from the first crop of his Sorrento Stud based sire Louis The King.
The latter, winner of the Triple Crown (Gauteng Guineas, SA Classic, SA Derby) at three and the Gr1 Summer Cup at four, made a pleasing start with his first crop including not only Pamushana’s Pride but also Listed Somerset 1200 runner up Matthew The King and debut winner Louis Gem.
Louis The King has a single lot on offer at the 2021 National Yearling Sale -a half-sister (Lot 131) to East Cape Fillies Nursery/Perfect Promise Sprint winner The Merry Widow.
