With a filly having won the only Gr1 race for 2yo males this term, the chase for champion status in that category remains wide open. We saw something quite special at Fairview on Sunday and with entries closing at the end of this week for the Gr1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion at Scottsville on 4 June, trainer Alan Greeff and the Scribante family have a few important decisions to make.
The R150 000 Listed Dahlia Plate was a walk in the park for the Tiger Ridge colt who retained his unbeaten record of three from three when following up on his Listed East Cape Nursery victory with an even more impressive performance.
After Cape visitor Var Ahead had gone quickly early on, it was clear at the 400m marker that one horse was going best of all.
Oomph was going far better than anything around him and given his head by Aldo Domeyer, he simply drew away to win by 5,25 lengths in a time of 70,49 secs.
Turbo stayed on best of the rest to run second, ahead of Bollemakiesie – but they were in another race entirely.
“It was tempting. I wanted to let him go at the 600m already, as he was ready. He has improved so much in terms of maturity. He sort of knew what was required today. This is better than anything I have ridden for a long time,” said Aldo Domeyer, who also thanked his Dad, Andrew Fortune, who is the regular stable rider.
The winner is owned by stalwart supporters of East Cape racing Celso and Lee Scribante and is a R260 000 National Yearling Sale graduate
Unbeaten in three starts, Oomph took his earnings to R226 250 and was also the beneficiary of the rather attractive incentive of a BSA Added Value Stakes Bonus of R77 500.
Bred by Wilgerbosdrift and Mauritzfontein, Oomph is from the final crop of the ill-fated Storm Cat stallion Tiger Ridge.
While trainer Alan Greefff did not hint at it, the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Medallion at the Scottsville Festival Of Speed meeting on June 4 seems the logical route for the talented sprinter.
Entries for that event close on Friday 20 May.
